The ReCONNstruction Center is a nonprofit, volunteer-run architectural salvage and reuse store in New Britain, CT. For over 20 years, we’ve been keeping usable building materials out of the landfill and making them accessible to the community. We are looking for hands-on volunteers to join The Hands of ReCONN, the on site team of volunteers that performs tasks that are critical to the operations of the non-profit.
What You’ll Do
Salvage Team volunteers work directly with incoming materials and help prepare items for resale and reuse:
- Measure, label and move (hardware, doors, windows, fixtures, etc.)
- Identify reusable vs. non-salvageable materials; perform minor repairs, if you are skilled in this area
- Perform light deconstruction (removing hardware, separating components)
- Clean, organize, and prepare items for the sales floor
- Help maintain a safe, functional, and organized workspace
This is active, physical work with real, visible impact—what you process today is what someone else gets to reuse tomorrow.
What We’re Looking For
- Comfortable with hands-on, physical work (lifting, standing, moving materials)
- Interest in reuse, sustainability, DIY, or building trades
- Willingness to learn basic tool use and material handling
- Team-oriented, reliable, and adaptable
- No prior experience required—training provided
Why Volunteer with ReCONN
- Be part of a unique, volunteer-run community space
- Learn practical skills (tools, materials, salvage techniques)
- Help divert usable materials from the landfill
- Support affordable access to building supplies
- Work alongside creative, mission-driven people
