Board of Directors Member

Role Description

This is a part-time volunteer position for a Board of Directors Member based in Chicago, IL (remote work possible). The Board of Directors is responsible for driving the organization's mission, guiding strategic direction, providing governance, and ensuring compliance and sustainable financial practices. Duties include participating regular meetings, contributing to committees and/or assigned tasks, engaging in fundraising activities, and fostering community partnerships. As Resonate Joy has a small staff, the Board will also be involved in some aspects of day-to-day operations. Board Members collaborate closely with the executive team to execute the organization’s mission effectively.

Key Responsibilities

• Governance & Oversight – Participate in decision-making to ensure the organization operates ethically, legally, and in alignment with its mission.
• Strategic Leadership – Contribute to setting long-term goals, evaluating progress, and adapting strategies as needed.
• Financial Stewardship – Approve budgets, monitor finances, and assist with fundraising efforts to ensure sustainability.
• Advocacy & Networking – Represent the organization in the community, fostering partnerships and opening doors to resources.
• Participation – Attend board meetings, committee meetings, and key events; review materials in advance; and engage actively in discussions.
• Support – Serve as a Doer (actively contribute your skills and expertise), a Donor (make a personally meaningful financial contribution), and a Door Opener (help connect the organization to new supporters and opportunities).

Time Commitment

• 4 annual board meetings annually (plus committee meetings and special meetings as applicable).
• Participation in major events, fundraising activities, and day-to-day operations as appropriate.
• Estimated 2-3 hours per week.

Term

Board members serve a 3 year term, renewable by vote.

Compensation

This is a volunteer position. Board Members are not compensated as is typical of nonprofit boards.
