    Hospice Patient Companionship Volunteer

Be the Reason Someone Smiles Today.

A Serene Healthcare Services | Stafford, TX

Sometimes, the Greatest Gift You Can Give Is Your Time.

Imagine making someone's day brighter simply by showing up.

A friendly conversation. A familiar smile. Listening to a favorite story. Sitting beside someone so they don't feel alone.

These small moments can mean everything.

At A Serene Healthcare Services, we believe compassionate hospice care goes beyond medical treatment. It's about dignity, connection, comfort, and making every moment matter.

We're looking for kindhearted, dependable individuals to join our volunteer team and provide companionship and emotional support to hospice patients and their families throughout the Greater Houston area.

You don't need a medical background or previous hospice experience. Just compassion, patience, reliability, and a genuine desire to make a difference.

We'll provide the training and guidance. You bring the heart.

    What You'll Do

As a Patient Companionship Volunteer, you may:

    • Spend meaningful one-on-one time with hospice patients.
    • Offer friendly conversation, companionship, and a listening ear.
    • Read books, magazines, poetry, or inspirational materials.
    • Play cards, board games, or participate in simple activities.
    • Listen to music or share favorite songs.
    • Help patients enjoy hobbies and activities appropriate to their abilities.
    • Provide a calming, reassuring presence.
    • Offer companionship to individuals who may feel isolated or lonely.
    • Provide emotional support through conversation and attentive listening.
    • Offer a comforting presence while family caregivers take a brief break, when approved and appropriate.

Every patient is different. Your volunteer assignment will be thoughtfully matched to individual needs, interests, comfort levels, and your availability.

Sometimes, simply being there is enough.

    Who We're Looking For

You may be a wonderful fit if you are:

    • Compassionate, patient, and respectful.
    • A good listener who enjoys connecting with others.
    • Dependable and committed to honoring scheduled visits.
    • Comfortable interacting with older adults and individuals facing serious illness.
    • Sensitive to different backgrounds, beliefs, cultures, and family situations.
    • Able to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
    • Willing to learn about hospice care and end-of-life support.

Previous healthcare experience is not required.

A Meaningful Opportunity for Students & Future Healthcare Professionals

Are you considering a career in nursing, medicine, social work, psychology, counseling, public health, or another healthcare-related field?

Hospice volunteering offers a unique opportunity to gain exposure to the human side of healthcare while developing valuable interpersonal and professional skills.

    Volunteers may strengthen their:

    • Communication and active listening skills.
    • Empathy and emotional awareness.
    • Understanding of hospice and palliative care.
    • Patient-centered communication.
    • Professionalism and confidentiality awareness.
    • Cultural sensitivity.
    • Experience supporting individuals and families during vulnerable moments.

Volunteer service hours may be documented and verified upon request.

Please note that this is a nonclinical volunteer opportunity. School credit, internship requirements, or clinical-hour eligibility must be confirmed with your academic program.

Flexible Scheduling That Fits Your Life

We understand that volunteers have jobs, school, family responsibilities, and other commitments.

We work to match volunteers with opportunities based on their availability and patient needs.

Depending on current assignments, opportunities may include weekday or weekend visits and recurring companionship assignments.

We value consistency, but you don't need to volunteer every day to make an impact.

What to Expect Before You Begin

Your safety, preparation, and the well-being of our patients are important to us.

Selected applicants will complete an onboarding process that may include:

    • Volunteer application and brief interview.
    • Background screening.
    • Hospice volunteer orientation.
    • HIPAA, confidentiality, and patient privacy training.
    • Infection prevention and personal safety education.
    • Patient rights, dignity, and professional boundaries training.
    • Role-specific preparation and assignment approval.

Additional screening or requirements may apply depending on the assigned setting.

Our volunteer team will help prepare you for your role before you begin visiting patients.

Important: This Is a Nonclinical Volunteer Role

Although this opportunity involves direct interaction with hospice patients, volunteers do not perform nursing procedures, administer medications, provide medical treatment, or perform hands-on personal care.

All volunteer visits are coordinated and supervised through A Serene Healthcare Services.

    Why Volunteer with A Serene?

Hospice care is about helping people experience comfort, dignity, and connection during life's most meaningful moments.

As a volunteer, you'll become part of a compassionate community dedicated to supporting patients and their families.

Your presence may help someone feel heard, appreciated, comforted, or simply less alone.

You may not be able to add days to someone's life, but you can help bring more meaning to the moments they have.
