About us:

Grief Matters is a new nonprofit founded by Dr. Camille Wortman, a psychologist who specializes in grief. Most bereaved individuals turn to the internet to find material to help them cope with their loss, but they often have difficulty locating what they are looking for. Dr. Wortman and her staff reviewed hundreds of websites to identify the top internet resources for dozens of topics on grief. We are developing a unique website called Why Grief Matters that brings all these resources together in one place.

The website includes resources for over 20 different types of loss. The resources come in a variety of formats including articles, stories, podcasts, blog posts, videos, and apps. There is a rich array of material about the grieving process. The website integrates and organizes resources on peer support and support groups from dozens of other sites. It also includes information about low-cost options for therapy. To help build resilience, information about such topics as exercise, meditation, and practicing gratitude is included. The website also provides extensive resources for underserved groups including African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, the LGBTQ+ community, and People with Disabilities.

A preliminary version of the website (www.whygriefmatters.org) received excellent reviews from grief experts and has been featured in The New York Times and other influential media outlets. Our site has already been praised by leading experts, including Dr. Therese Rando, who described our platform as “the best bereavement resource on the planet.” With your help, we can complete the website build and bring it to the millions who need it.

We're building the website using two open-source projects:

• Why Grief Matters website – Built with Astro, this will be our welcoming digital home where people can find the support and resources that they need during their grief journey.
• Grief Matters CMS – Our thoughtfully designed content management system on Sanity, empowering our team to share resources with care and efficiency.

How you’ll make a difference - Your contributions could include:

• Developing new features that help people who are struggling with grief
• Improving site performance and making our site more accessible and welcoming for everyone
• Enhance the tools our content team uses to share resources
• Building responsive, user-friendly interfaces

We’re looking for:

• We need front-end specialists or full-stack engineers with strong front-end expertise who want to use their skills for social impact.
• Background and Experience: We need developers with intermediate to advanced front-end skills - typically 2+ years of professional experience or equivalent demonstrated through substantial personal/academic projects.

Required technical skills

You must have demonstrated experience with all the following skills:

• Modern JavaScript & TypeScript: Comfortable writing and debugging TypeScript in a production environment
• CSS and Tailwind: Strong skills with modern CSS features and the Tailwind CSS framework
• Component frameworks: Hands-on experience with Astro, React, Vue, or similar (we use Astro + Web Components and React for Sanity Studio)
• Vanilla web technologies: Ability to build interactive features using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Web APIs, without reliance on frameworks or third-party libs
• Collaborative development: Experience with version control (Git), pull requests, GitHub Actions, work items, etc.

Before You Apply

Please ensure you can confidently answer "yes" to these questions:

• Can you commit to working a minimum of four hours per week? Can you commit to working a minimum of two to four hours per week? Can you build responsive layouts using modern CSS without relying on component libraries?
• Have you worked with TypeScript on projects lasting several weeks or months?
• Can you create interactive web components using vanilla JavaScript?
