About the Role
We are looking for an analytical and detail-oriented Research Associate (Volunteer) to support the execution of our research initiatives. You will work on cutting-edge environmental and legal justice topics, gathering data, conducting literature reviews, and drafting white papers and general reports that support our legal defense efforts and policy advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Topical Research: Conduct deep-dive research into emerging environmental issues, pre-trial detention practices, human rights violations, and legal reform in Nigeria.
- Writing & Drafting: Assist in writing and editing white papers, policy briefs, and public education materials adhering to strict academic writing standards.
- AI & Tool Usage: Responsibly utilize LLMs and modern research tools to accelerate research pipelines, organize literature, and synthesize findings.
- Data Analysis: Synthesize complex legal frameworks, case law, and environmental metrics into clear, actionable summaries.
- Team Participation: Attend and contribute updates during the mandatory 1-hour monthly strategy meeting on the last Thursday of every month.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Academic Background: Bachelor’s degree (completed or final year) or Law degree (LL.B) in Law, Environmental Science, Criminology, Sociology, or related disciplines.
- Writing Rigor: Familiarity with standard academic citation styles (OSCOLA, APA, Harvard), rigorous bibliography management, and strong writing skills.
- Tech Savviness: Hands-on experience or familiarity with AI research tools/LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Consensus, Elicit) alongside traditional databases.
- Self-Drive & Integrity: Strong work ethic, ability to work independently without constant follow-ups, and a firm commitment to legal and environmental justice.
- Technical Setup: Resident in Nigeria with reliable power and internet access (specialized tools provided).

- Attendance at the 1-hour strategy meeting on the last Thursday of every month is mandatory.
