The tasks associated with the Barn Help opportunity are largely dependent upon the amount of equine experience a volunteer has. Those without horse experience can help with routine cleaning, event preparation, equipment organization and maintenance, and planning of activities. Those with previous horse experience can go through a brief training to help with grooming, bathing, mental health activities, and general upkeep of the horses. Volunteers work off of a list posted in the barn with daily, weekly, and monthly tasks to keep our herd happy and healthy!
This position can be self-scheduled or scheduled with a reccuring commitment within the working hours of the equine staff: M-Th 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-12pm.
Qualifications:
- There is no age limit for this position, but individuals under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult when volunteering.
- Attend an orientation session to familiarize yourself with the clinic and our programs.
- Able to work as a team with other volunteers and staff members.
- Willing to learn and follow DST procedures and policies.
- Able to accept constructive feedback and follow direction from DST staff members.
Responsibilities:
- Check in at the Volunteer Center and view daily schedules and announcements.
- Check task list in the barn to asses what the daily needs are.
- Complete tasks that are appropriate to your level of training and ask for clarification from an equine staff member when necessary.
- Check items off of the list that are completed.
- Check back out at the end of the shift to record hours volunteered.
