Volunteer as a SHINE Counselor

SHINE Counselors are dedicated community volunteers who receive comprehensive training and become state-certified Medicare counselors. No prior insurance experience is required—just compassion, reliability, and a desire to help others.

As a SHINE Counselor, you will learn about:

• Medicare Part A, B, and D
• Medigap (supplement) insurance
• Medicare Advantage (HMOs and PPOs)
• Retiree and employer health plans
• Prescription drug assistance programs
• Medicaid (MassHealth)
• Programs that support people with limited income and resources

After completing training, volunteers take a state certification exam and then begin meeting with community members to provide unbiased, trusted guidance.
