Event Host (Online Community Volunteer)

About the Role

Event Hosts create and host the activities that bring people together at AFK Cafe.

We're looking for people who enjoy connecting with others and want to help create reasons for Cafe Companions to spend time together.

You don't need to be a professional event planner, and you don't need to host every kind of event. We want Event Hosts to choose activities that fit their own interests, personality, and availability.

You might host:

📺 Watch Parties

Host anime nights, movies, TV shows, seasonal marathons, themed watch parties, or other things you think would be fun to experience together.

🎮 Game Parties

Bring people together for multiplayer games, party games, Jackbox, casual gaming, community challenges, or a game you simply want to introduce to other people.

🎲 Board Game Nights

Host online board game nights, introduce the community to games you enjoy, teach beginner-friendly games, or create recurring board game gatherings.

📚 Book Clubs

Lead a book club, manga or comic club, reading challenge, themed reading group, or casual discussion for people who want to read together.

☕ Social Events & Hangouts

Not every event needs a game or structured activity.

You can host coffee chats, voice hangouts, discussion nights, get-to-know-you activities, interest-based conversations, or simply create a time and place for people to come talk and spend time together.

Sometimes the event is simply giving people somewhere to be together.

What an Event Host Does

As an Event Host, you'll help:

• Choose or develop events you genuinely want to host
• Schedule your events with the Cafe
• Welcome Cafe Companions when they arrive
• Explain activities when needed
• Start conversations and help people engage with one another
• Help newcomers feel included
• Keep conversations and activities moving without forcing participation
• Pay attention to the overall atmosphere of the space you're hosting
• Model AFK Cafe's community expectations
• Respect and reinforce community boundaries
• Notice behavior that may make the space uncomfortable or unsafe
• Know when something should be brought to a moderator or Cafe leadership
• Communicate if you need help, need to cancel, or cannot fulfill a commitment
• Collaborate with other Event Hosts and contributors when you want to create something larger

Event Hosts help hold the space while they're hosting it.

That means we want you to care about both the activity and the people participating in it.

You are not expected to act as a moderator or handle serious safety situations by yourself. You'll learn how to recognize concerns, when to step in appropriately, and when to get support from the Cafe team.

You Don't Need to Be an Extrovert

Being an Event Host doesn't mean you have to constantly entertain everyone.

A great host might be someone who:

• Loves talking and keeping conversations going
• Quietly makes sure nobody is being excluded
• Gets really excited about introducing people to their favorite anime
• Has a giant board game collection and wants people to play with
• Wants to start the book club they've always wished existed
• Likes organizing multiplayer game nights
• Is good at making newcomers feel comfortable
• Simply enjoys hanging out with people and creating a welcoming atmosphere

Different personalities create different kinds of great events.

We're looking for people who want to help make AFK Cafe feel like a place where there's something to do, someone to talk to, and room to belong.
