Sustainable Living Lab USA (SL2) Impact
At SL2, we envision a world in which sustainability can be lived out. We believe that with our rapidly changing environment and society, new innovative solutions are necessary in order to navigate and thrive in these transitional times. Our mission is to create and implement sustainable solutions that navigate the climate, societal and digital transitions in our community locally and beyond.
Founded in Singapore, and active across Asia, the US, with a footprint across 40 countries, we combine foresight, technology, and grassroots engagement to turn complex challenges into real-world outcomes where sustainability can be lived out. Within the US, our main focus is on societal and digital-green futures; equipping organizations and educators with hands-on tools and future-ready skills to create a more empowered workforce. These programs center on STEM and maker education, AI and emerging technologies workforce upskilling and professional development, and active aging programs for seniors. SL2 Impact is a project fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge.
Advisory Board Member
Location: Remote / Hybrid (Boston, MA or Austin, TX preferred)
Duration: One Year
Position Type: Volunteer (unpaid)
Position Summary:
SL2 Impact is looking for a passionate fundraising expert to join the Advisory Board as the organization embarks on its first year of incorporation. As we are just starting out this new project, you have a unique opportunity to assist with shaping and molding SL2 Impact from the ground up through your expertise in development. From assisting with grant writing and relationship building, to donor cultivation and annual giving, your invaluable experience will launch SL2 Impact on the path to success. This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who wants to be at the forefront of something new, with the chance to create new impact.
Description:
Advisory Board Members serve as a roster of trusted experts, community champions, and strategic thinkers passionate about SL2 Impact’s mission and work. You will provide the leadership team with critical insights, industry expertise, and networking opportunities to support our strategic goals.
SL2 Impact Advisory Board Member works in partnership with the staff and other board members, and is an ambassador for SL2 Impact in the community. Advisory board members are expected to advise and support the management of the organization and mission carried out by the staff.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Counsel
- Provide objective, expert advice on organization initiatives, program expansion, marketing, technology, or financial sustainability (based on your specific personal and professional background)
- Ambassadorship
- Stays informed about the organization’s mission, policies, financial health, programs, and needs
- Act as a champion for the organization’s mission, raising awareness within your professional and personal networks
- Resource & Network Development
- Connect the nonprofit to potential donors, corporate partners, grant opportunities, or talent that can accelerate our mission and influence public policy
- Meeting and Committee Participation
- Attend quarterly Advisory Board meetings and actively engage in discussions regarding the organization’s challenges and milestones (four per year; once per quarter, each meeting is around 1.5 hours)
- Collaborates with other advisory board members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to SL2 Impact’s mission
- Serve on one Advisory Committee – a small subset of the Board which focuses on one of the following areas: fundraising/development, marketing, programs, and finance.
- Advisory Committee meetings are ad hoc (estimated time around 3 hours every quarter)
- Special Projects
- Occasionally advise on or support short-term committees or special projects aligned with your expertise
- Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time
- Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
- Members must disclose any personal or professional conflicts of interest regarding the nonprofit’s activities and refrain from advising on those specific matters.
- Makes a one year commitment
- Gives a donation as appropriate
Qualifications:
- Strong professional background with proven success in fundraising and development
- Grant making with foundations, corporations, and local government
- Annual giving and individual donor campaigns
- Overall development strategy
- Based in Massachusetts or Texas
- Established professional networks and a willingness to make warm introductions on behalf of the organization
- Strong communication skills and a willingness to work alongside a diverse group of fellow advisors and staff
- A genuine passion for SL2 Impact’s mission, a commitment to advancing social impact, and a love of community building
