LSF Fix-It Crew!

Love fixing things, building things, or figuring out how things work? We could use you!
The Lancaster Science Factory is a hands-on museum, which means our exhibits get a LOT of hands-on use. We’re looking for handy, mechanically minded volunteers to join our Science Factory Fix-It Crew and help us keep our exhibits and spaces in great working order.
This is an ongoing volunteer opportunity with a mix of planned projects and occasional smaller repairs. You’ll work alongside our Facilities Manager and help support the behind-the-scenes work that keeps the Science Factory running.
What might you do?
Depending on your skills and our current needs, volunteer projects may include:
- Helping move, install, rearrange, or modify exhibits
- Assisting with larger exhibit and facility projects
- Making minor exhibit repairs and adjustments
- Tightening, fastening, assembling, or replacing basic hardware
- Using hand tools for simple repairs and projects
- Helping troubleshoot exhibit components
- Organizing materials, tools, and project areas
- Pitching in with other hands-on projects identified by our Facilities Manager
No two days are necessarily the same. Some projects may be a quick repair to get an exhibit working again, while others may be part of a larger transformation happening throughout the museum.
We're especially interested in people who:
- Enjoy working with their hands
- Like figuring out how things work
- Have experience with basic tools, building, repair, fabrication, woodworking, electrical or mechanical projects, or similar hands-on work
- Are comfortable learning new skills
- Pay attention to detail and take pride in doing things safely and correctly
- Can follow directions and work collaboratively with staff
You do not need to be a professional tradesperson! If you're the person friends and family call when something needs fixing, we'd love to hear from you.
We'll match projects to your skills and comfort level. Volunteers will work under the direction of our Facilities Manager, and we will never expect you to take on a task you're not comfortable performing.
Why volunteer with us?
The Lancaster Science Factory is full of hands-on exhibits designed to spark curiosity and encourage visitors to explore how things work. Your work will have a direct impact on the experience of the thousands of children, families, students, and educators who visit us.
You'll also get a behind-the-scenes look at how a science museum operates and the satisfaction of seeing your work become part of the visitor experience.
If you like making things work, we have plenty of things that need you!
Time Commitment
This is an ongoing, flexible volunteer opportunity. Volunteers can sign up for individual project days or let us know that they'd like to be contacted when projects matching their skills become available.
Some projects may take a few hours, while larger projects may involve multiple volunteer sessions.
