    About Uganda Village Project

Uganda Village Project is a U.S.-registered nonprofit that empowers underserved adolescents and women in rural Uganda by advancing access to sexual and reproductive health education and services. Our programs include obstetric fistula prevention, surgical repair and survivor reintegration, and adolescent reproductive health (ARH) programming delivered in schools and communities.

We envision a future where all Ugandan adolescents and women thrive in supportive communities, with full access to physical, mental, reproductive, and sexual health resources.

We are a small, grassroots organization where volunteer board members play a direct and meaningful role in our work.

    About the Role

UVP is seeking a Board Member to join its Development & Communications Committee, which is led by an existing Committee Chair. The committee supports UVP's fundraising, donor relations, and external communications. Members contribute according to their skills and availability, with flexibility built in to accommodate the natural ebb and flow of volunteer bandwidth. There are no rigid role boundaries — what matters is that collectively the committee keeps UVP's fundraising and communications functioning and growing.

This role has a specific focus on marketing and campaigns. You’ll work hands-on with the Chair and Executive Director to plan and execute fundraising appeals, sharpen UVP’s messaging, and help grow the donor base. The ED currently carries much of this load; this role meaningfully relieves that and brings dedicated marketing expertise to the committee.

The committee reports to the full Board of Directors.

    What the Committee Does

    • Individual donor fundraising: developing and executing fundraising campaigns and appeals, nurturing relationships with existing donors, and finding ways to grow a small but loyal donor base
    • Grant research: identifying opportunities that align with UVP's mission and programs
    • Communications & social media: maintaining a consistent external presence that keeps existing donors connected to the mission and presents a credible face to prospective supporters and partners

    What This Role Focuses On

Within the broader committee remit, the Marketing & Campaigns member will focus primarily on:

    • Campaign strategy and execution: planning and running fundraising appeals across the year, particularly focusing on end-of-year/Giving Tuesday
    • Email copy and messaging: reviewing and optimizing appeals for clarity, tone, and impact; UVP has strong stories and real room to improve execution quality
    • Matching gift campaigns: helping structure and communicate matching opportunities, which have historically been UVP’s most successful fundraising mechanic
    • Donor list growth: developing strategies to expand UVP’s email list and reach donors beyond the current board-connected base
    • Story selection and framing — UVP runs year-round surgical camps and has a continuous supply of patient stories; this role helps decide how they’re used in appeals

    What We're Looking For

People with genuine experience in one or more of the following areas who are willing to roll up their sleeves:

    • Individual donor fundraising, campaign strategy, or direct appeals
    • Donor communications and storytelling
    • Digital marketing or social media management in a nonprofit context
    • Grant research or prospect identification
    • Nonprofit development more broadly

Experience in global health, women's rights, or international development is a plus but not required. What matters most is practical fundraising knowledge, good judgment, and the ability to work independently within a small, committed team.

    What to Expect

    • Board meetings – approximately 8 per year – held virtually
    • Ad-hoc committee meetings – held virtually
    • Collaboration with other team members based on capacity and expertise
    • Direct working relationship with the ED, who provides organizational context, final approvals, and grant writing capacity
    • A genuine opportunity to make a measurable difference for a cause that changes lives

    Time Commitment

A few hours per month on average, with more active periods around fundraising campaigns and appeal cycles, plus attendance at virtual board meetings.

    How to Apply

Interested candidates should send a brief cover note and resume or LinkedIn profile to info@ugandavillageproject.org, outlining relevant experience and what draws you to this role. We review applications on a rolling basis, so early submissions are encouraged. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a virtual conversation with the Executive Director and a current board member.
