    About

Free to Be Youth seeks a Development Intern on a semester basis (spring, fall, or summer). The intern will work in tandem with the Development Associate in achieving our project’s development goals. This position will provide hands-on experience in managing development administrative tasks that will support the execution of our events and fundraisers, and help with donor development, including research, writing appeal letters, and strategies for donor engagement. At the Free to Be Youth Project, we believe all young people should have life’s basic necessities: a place to live, a source of support, and legal immigration status. We have continued to attack the intractable problems of homelessness, poverty, and discrimination against LGBTQ+ youth through an exceptional model of legal services and grassroots advocacy. FYP is housed within the Urban Justice Center, a dynamic non-profit law collective. The Development intern's duties include but are not limited to the following:

    • Research and make recommendations based on the research for prospective funding, including corporate foundations, foundations, government funding, and individuals.
    • Assist with sponsorship, grant, and other funding submissions, as well as donor outreach.
    • Maintain trackers and databases to track institutional giving activity.
    • Accurately enter and maintain donor contributions in the database.
    • Generate reports from donation database as needed.
    • Provide the Director with donor giving histories, donation analytics and financial reporting as needed.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree (or currently pursuing) or equivalent experience
    • Passionate about the mission of FYP and the areas of LGBTQ+ rights, civil rights, and youth advocacy

    Skills

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Detail oriented and organized
    • Excellent time management skills and self-initiative, comfortable working both collaboratively and independently
    • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel
    • Experience with Donor Perfect, ActBlue, Give Butter or similar donor database
    • Exceptional research skills
    • Ability to think strategically, analyze data, and present analysis clearly
    • Flexibility to work both independently and collaboratively
    • Sense of humor

    To Apply

Please send a resume, and a few sentences about why you’d like to work at FYP (no more than a paragraph), to fypdevelopment@urbanjustice.org. You can use information you find online about FYP to assist you in your application materials. We will review applications on a rolling basis, please indicate the semester you are interested in interning in your subject line and cover letter (ex “Fall Development Intern 2026 Application”).
