UMDF is seeking passionate and skilled individuals to join our Board of Trustees. As a trustee, you will play a critical role in shaping the organization’s mission and strategy, ensuring strong governance, advancing financial sustainability, and serving as an advocate for the mitochondrial disease community.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight to advance UMDF’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Serve as an ambassador for UMDF, building awareness and credibility in your personal and professional networks.
- Participate in fundraising by making a personal annual contribution and engaging in donor cultivation, sponsorships, and partnerships.
- Ensure strong governance and compliance with nonprofit best practices, policies, and legal obligations.
- Contribute your skills, expertise, and perspective to board discussions and committee work.
- Actively participate in four board meetings per year (virtual and in-person), serve on a board committee, and attend UMDF events when possible.
Current Board Recruitment Focus
- One trustee with expertise in Public Relations & Communications (media strategy, storytelling, brand reputation, external media connections)
- One trustee with expertise in Data, Technology & Systems (Salesforce, data strategy, digital transformation, applications)
Two additional trustees with backgrounds in any of the other areas listed below:
- Fundraising & Philanthropy (donor engagement, campaigns, corporate partnerships)
- Finance & Investment (audit, budgeting, nonprofit financial oversight)
- Legal & Governance (nonprofit compliance, board leadership)
- Healthcare Administration (clinical operations, patient services, policy)
- Advocacy & Public Affairs (policy influence, patient voice, public engagement)
- Business Leadership (strategy, operations, innovation, entrepreneurship)
We also strongly value diversity of backgrounds, experiences, geography, and demographics to reflect the community we serve.
Commitment
- Term: 3 years (renewable based on engagement and capacity)
- Time: Approx. 4–10 hours/quarter (board meetings, committee work, events)
- Philanthropy: Trustees are expected to make a personal financial contribution each year and assist in UMDF’s fundraising efforts.
