CHT will be opening our fourth community garden this Summer at Flodberg Park and we need volunteers to help bring it to life!
Our community gardens alleviate food insecurity by equipping participants with the tools and education to grow their own produce. This beloved program encourages participants to lead active lifestyles, become environmental stewards, and foster community connections all while providing access to fresh, nutritious food.
Volunteers play an essential role in preparing the garden for its opening by building the foundation for future gardeners to rent a garden bed to plant in. Whether it’s assembling and filling garden beds, or preparing the site, every task completed brings us closer to opening this resource for the community.
On-site tasks include assembling and placing 25 garden beds, then filling them with wood chips, soil, and compost. Volunteers should expect to lift 10-30 pounds throughout the day. More details are below.
The specific tasks on the volunteer day may vary depending on project progress and material deliveries. Volunteers may help with:
- Filling raised garden beds with wood matter, soil, and compost (if all materials are delivered by the volunteer date)
- Spreading mulch across pathways and around garden beds
- Positioning and assembling aluminum garden beds
- Light construction support (helping move materials, raking, leveling, or clean-up)
Physical Requirements
- Tasks may involve lifting, bending, squatting, carrying buckets, and moving materials.
- Some tasks may require lifting or carrying materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
- Volunteers should be comfortable with moderate physical activity outdoors for up to 4 hours (with breaks).
- Work will be done in teams, with flexibility to match comfort and ability levels.
- Use of garden tools such as rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, gloves, etc.
