Help ImpactKits find the right words to tell stories that matter.

The ImpactKits Project is seeking a creative and thoughtful Social Media Copywriting & Storytelling Specialist to help turn our mission, programs, campaigns, and community impact into clear, engaging, and memorable content.

You'll work alongside our Social Media Strategy & Content Planning Specialist, Social Media Trends & Audience Insights Specialist, Social Media Content Creator, and Motion Graphics & Animation Specialist.

Your focus will be the messaging and storytelling behind our content.

You may write a short Reel script, develop a strong opening hook, turn an impact story into a social post, create a compelling call to action, or help simplify an important message so people understand it quickly.

You will have creative freedom while working within ImpactKits' mission, brand voice, and communications goals.

Most importantly, you will not be expected to create the entire piece of content yourself. You'll provide the words and storytelling direction that allow our creative production team to bring those ideas to life.

    What You'll Do

    Social Media Copywriting

    • Write scripts for short-form videos, Reels, TikToks, and YouTube Shorts.
    • Develop strong hooks that capture attention quickly.
    • Write captions, headlines, calls to action, and supporting copy.
    • Create copy for carousels, Stories, graphics, and promotional content.
    • Adapt messaging for different platforms and audiences.
    • Edit and strengthen existing copy for clarity, tone, accuracy, and engagement.
    • Turn complex nonprofit or community topics into simple, accessible language.

    Storytelling

    • Help tell the stories behind ImpactKits' mission and community work.
    • Develop storytelling concepts around volunteers, collection sites, community partners, campaigns, and impact.
    • Identify compelling details or perspectives that could make a story more engaging.
    • Help structure stories with strong openings, clear narratives, and meaningful conclusions.
    • Develop interview questions and story prompts when appropriate.
    • Help transform real experiences and organizational information into authentic content.

    Campaign Messaging

Work with the Strategy & Content Planning team to develop:

    • Campaign messaging
    • Key talking points
    • Video scripts
    • Content series
    • Calls to action
    • Storytelling frameworks
    • Messaging variations for different audiences

You may also help create messaging guidelines for recurring ImpactKits campaigns.

What You Will NOT Be Expected to Do

You will not be expected to:

    • Write every piece of ImpactKits' content.
    • Manage ImpactKits' social media accounts.
    • Develop the entire social media strategy.
    • Create all videos or graphics.
    • Animate or edit every project.
    • Research every social media trend.
    • Manage other creative volunteers.
    • Develop entire campaigns independently.
    • Purchase software, equipment, or other resources.
    • Work beyond your agreed weekly commitment.

You are a specialist and collaborator, not the entire communications department.

    How You'll Be Supported

You will receive campaign priorities, organizational context, relevant information, and branding guidance from the ImpactKits team.

You'll have a designated point of contact for questions, feedback, priorities, and project support.

When you are writing for a specific campaign, you'll generally receive the information needed to understand:

    • What we're trying to accomplish
    • Who we're trying to reach
    • What we need people to understand
    • What action we want them to take
    • Where the content will be used

If you need information, assets, clarification, or a decision before you can continue, you can flag the task as Blocked so your coordinator can help resolve or escalate it.

    Qualifications

We're looking for someone who enjoys writing, storytelling, communications, and social media.

Professional experience is not required. Relevant experience can come from:

    • Personal social media accounts
    • School newspapers or publications
    • Student organizations
    • Creative writing
    • Video scripts
    • Blogging
    • Journalism
    • Marketing projects
    • Volunteer work
    • Personal projects
    • Freelance work

    You should also have:

    • Strong writing and editing skills.
    • An understanding of how social media content captures attention.
    • Creativity and curiosity.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • The ability to adapt writing to different audiences and platforms.
    • The ability to accept feedback and revise your work.
    • The ability to work independently on assigned tasks while communicating proactively when support is needed.
    • An interest in community service and nonprofit storytelling.

Experience with Canva, Google Workspace, social media platforms, content calendars, or basic marketing concepts is helpful but not required.

    Commitment

This is a long-term, fully remote volunteer opportunity requiring approximately 4–8 hours per week for a minimum of three months, with opportunities to remain involved longer.

Scheduling is flexible, and much of the work can be completed asynchronously.

Your workload will be assigned based on your stated availability. You may focus on a manageable number of campaigns or writing projects at a time rather than being responsible for all ImpactKits communications.

    Why Volunteer With ImpactKits?

    • Build a portfolio of real nonprofit copywriting and storytelling work.
    • Gain experience writing for social media and digital campaigns.
    • Develop skills in short-form storytelling and audience-focused messaging.
    • Work alongside a collaborative creative team.
    • See your writing transformed into videos, animations, graphics, and campaigns.
    • Help a growing student-led nonprofit communicate its mission more effectively.
    • Gain experience working remotely with an international volunteer team.
    • Earn volunteer service hours and professional references based on your contributions.
    • Help increase awareness and support for individuals and families experiencing hardship throughout Orange County, California.

Your words can help turn an idea into action.

You'll help make sure ImpactKits doesn't just have something to say but that it knows how to say it in a way people understand, remember, and care about.

The ImpactKits Project is committed to equal opportunity and providing an inclusive volunteer environment.
