About the Role
We are seeking an energetic, people-focused, and highly organized Director of Volunteer Talent & Culture to join our team. The primary focus of this role is to ensure R.O.Y.O. meets its strategic goals for recruiting, onboarding, and retaining top-tier volunteer talent. You will lead strategies that cultivate a positive, inclusive, and highly engaged organizational culture. As the primary champion for volunteer success, you will oversee end-to-end talent acquisition, retention initiatives, and community-building efforts to empower team members across the organization.
What You’ll do
Volunteer Talent Acquisition & Recruitment
- Develop and implement data-driven strategies to recruit qualified, passionate volunteers across all departments.
- Oversee and streamline the volunteer sourcing, interviewing, selection, and onboarding processes.
- Manage and mentor the Volunteer Recruitment and Onboarding team to ensure key staffing milestones are met.
Retention & Talent Management
- Design and execute volunteer retention programs to minimize turnover, boost engagement, and maintain active participation.
- Monitor volunteer satisfaction, conduct check-ins/exit surveys, and implement retention initiatives based on feedback.
- Support performance feedback, volunteer appreciation, and leadership pipeline development across departments.
Culture & Engagement
- Serve as the primary steward of R.O.Y.O.’s mission, motto, and core values, ensuring they are integrated into daily volunteer experiences.
- Foster an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative organizational environment for remote and local team members.
- Organize virtual and/or local team-building activities, appreciation events, and recognition programs.
Operations & Alignment
- Align volunteer talent strategies with overarching organizational and program goals.
- Maintain and track volunteer talent records, metrics, and recruitment reports.
- Provide guidance to departmental leadership on volunteer management best practices, conflict resolution, and workforce planning.
What You Bring
- Must be in agreement with and committed to upholding R.O.Y Organization’s Motto Statement, and Statement of Values, as well as its stated Mission and Vision;
- Must be located in the United States of America, preferably in the Chicagoland area;
- Must have strong, effective written and spoken communication skills along with excellent research and organizational skills;
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Organizational Leadership, Communications, Business Administration, or 2–5 years of relevant experience.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships, motivate teams, and cultivate a positive organizational culture.
- Strong organizational skills with experience managing changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and comfortable learning new volunteer/talent management software.
- Strong conflict management, diplomacy, and crisis resolution skills.
- Must have evidence of and a commitment to practice a high level of confidentiality;
- Self-motivated, collaborative, adaptable, and eager to grow professionally in the non-profit sector.
