Descripción
Provide instruction (with the aid of a lead mentor) to a classroom of refugees 1-2 times a week. Classes often revolve around language acquisition, literacy, or academic subject support. The material will not be hard and everything you need to know can be looked up on the spot. The main goal of mentors is to be a helpful and friendly face for people who are new to the United States and struggling. You should be confident in your ability to be one of the first connections these refugees have in America. The working hours are more flexible than One on Ones.
Responsibilities:
- Attend virtual meetings that occur at set times each week (flexible hours)
- Work and observe the lead mentor of the class as they teach
- Once you have observed 3 lessons, you are then eligible to become a lead mentor
- Track progress and share brief updates with the program coordinator
- Log any and all hours volunteered on POINTAPP software
- Maintain patience and cultural sensitivity given language barriers and trauma histories
- Communicate promptly if you are unable to attend a lesson
Qualifications:
- Hard working students comfortable with teaching bare minimum the English language (math, science, history, and coding are also possible subjects you can teach)
- Comfortable working in a classroom with adults or children from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to the lessons
- Currently, Spanish-speaking volunteers are extremely necessary, though people any language background are welcome to sign up as teachers
