The Veterinary Technician plays a vital role in the medical department, supporting the shelter veterinarian and assisting with the daily care and treatment of animals. This position involves hands-on clinical work, animal handling, and communication with both staff and the public.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the shelter veterinarian with physical exams, diagnostic testing, and medical treatments.
- Perform intake exams, administer vaccines, draw blood, collect samples, and perform lab work.
- Monitor animals during recovery.
- Provide daily health assessments for shelter animals.
- Administer medications, treatments, and preventive care as directed.
- Maintain accurate medical records in the shelter database.
- Provide humane handling, restraint, and comfort for animals of varying temperaments and species.
- Assist with spay/neuter clinics and community outreach programs as needed.
- Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the medical area.
- Support staff, volunteers, and adopters by sharing knowledge and promoting positive animal welfare practices.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 2 years of veterinary or shelter experience preferred.
- Strong animal handling skills and ability to work safely with animals of unknown histories.
- Familiarity with shelter medicine and disease prevention protocols is a plus.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
