    Description

    The Veterinary Technician plays a vital role in the medical department, supporting the shelter veterinarian and assisting with the daily care and treatment of animals. This position involves hands-on clinical work, animal handling, and communication with both staff and the public.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist the shelter veterinarian with physical exams, diagnostic testing, and medical treatments.
    • Perform intake exams, administer vaccines, draw blood, collect samples, and perform lab work.
    • Monitor animals during recovery.
    • Provide daily health assessments for shelter animals.
    • Administer medications, treatments, and preventive care as directed.
    • Maintain accurate medical records in the shelter database.
    • Provide humane handling, restraint, and comfort for animals of varying temperaments and species.
    • Assist with spay/neuter clinics and community outreach programs as needed.
    • Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the medical area.
    • Support staff, volunteers, and adopters by sharing knowledge and promoting positive animal welfare practices.

    Qualifications

    • Associate degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent experience.
    • Minimum 2 years of veterinary or shelter experience preferred.
    • Strong animal handling skills and ability to work safely with animals of unknown histories.
    • Familiarity with shelter medicine and disease prevention protocols is a plus.
    • Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
    • Ability to work compassionately in emotionally challenging environments.
    • Commitment to the mission of animal welfare and sheltering.
