PENCIL BOY SQUAD VOLUNTEER Next event: Thursday, August 6th from 9am – 1pm

A Gift for Teaching is Central Florida’s primary source of free school supplies for teachers and the students who need them most. We serve public schools in Orange and Osceola counties by providing educators with essential learning tools, completely free, so every student can succeed in the classroom.

VOLUNTEER OVERVIEW

Pencil Boy is the beloved mascot and “Chief Cheerleader” for A Gift for Teaching. He helps bring uplifting energy, school spirit, as well as smiles to teachers, students, families, volunteers, and community partners.

Pencil Boy Squad is a group of volunteers who bring this character to life at events across Central Florida by engaging with crowds, posing for photos, spreading joy, and representing the mission of A Gift for Teaching in a fun, positive, and professional way.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Participate in required training before joining the Pencil Boy Squad on-call list
• Respond to event availability requests when opportunities arise throughout the year
• Wear the mascot costume as designed
• Bring the character’s energetic, friendly personality to life as written in mascot guide
• Represent A Gift for Teaching’s mission with positivity, professionalism, and fun spirit
• Follow guidance from assigned mascot handler to move safely through event spaces
• Maintain awareness of personal comfort and safety while performing in a warm costume

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Must be between 5’7” and 5’11” tall
• Average build preferred to comfortably fit and actively move in the costume
• Comfortable standing and walking for up to 45 minutes while wearing a warm costume
• High-energy, upbeat, and comfortable engaging with crowds without speaking
• Dependable, punctual, and responsive to event scheduling requests
• Ability to follow safety instructions and work closely with a mascot handler
• Passion for supporting teachers, students, and the mission of A Gift for Teaching
