Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS) is searching for a qualified individual to become an exhibition design intern. This position provides an opportunity to actively design and install the inaugural exhibition of the museum set to open this autumn.

The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS) is a living archive of the Lower East Side's squats and gardens. It is currently designing its space, located in the storefront of a historic building in the East Village of New York. Once designed and set up the museum will display materials such as photographs, posters, zines, underground newspapers, comics, banners and buttons that show how local residents cleaned up vacant lots and buildings in the area, and made them organizing spaces for the community. The museum will also offer three daily tours, which will lead participants to the East Village's most legendary community gardens, squats and sites of social change, and explain their compelling and rich histories.

This part-time unpaid intern will be an integral part of helping to open the museum. We are looking to open within the month and are searching for self-starters ready to spring to action. He or she will work closely with the museum’s designer and directors to plan the layout of materials, source cost-effective installation materials and participate in the building and installation of the exhibits. A background in exhibition design, experience in mounting artworks and fabrication skills are helpful but not required.

The intern will also assist with the development, design and installation of various multimedia elements in the museum. Experience in multimedia work is helpful but not required. We are open to thoughts and suggestions as the museum is an open platform for those committed to community action.

Candidates should possess the following skills:

    1. Ability to spatially organize content into logical areas

    2. Knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite and graphic design skills

    3. A familiarity with installation methods

    4. Ability to adapt to the changing needs of a project

    5. Enthusiasm to pursue new projects - the museum is brand new and we are certainly open to new and exciting ideas

    6. Time commitment of at least 20 hours a week

    7. Flexibility with working conditions and location - as the museum space is not yet open working locations will vary

Many volunteers with the museum also participate in community garden volunteer days to help develop our relationships with the local gardens. Our organization is located in the East Village of New York City, and we ask that you consider your transportation arrangements when applying.

To apply, please email a cover letter and resume to the internship coordinator at internships@morusnyc.org. Please include "Exhibition Design Intern/Volunteer" in the subject line.
