Board of Directors — Multiple Roles

Approx 4-6 hrs per month (quarterly meetings + committee work + ambassadorship)

Stoop Stories connects New York City neighbors across generations and differences to reduce loneliness and increase compassion and joy. Through documentary stories and community events, we celebrate stoop culture and highlight underrepresented communities.

We encourage BIPOC candidates, candidates ages 20s–40s, and candidates from across NYC's diverse neighborhoods to apply.

Who we're looking for: Passionate, committed leaders to join our growing Board of Directors as we build the infrastructure to sustain and scale our mission. We recently became a 501(c)(3) and are intentionally building a board that reflects the intergenerational, cross-cultural community we serve. This is an extraordinary opportunity to help shape a young, mission-driven nonprofit at a pivotal moment.

We are currently recruiting for three specific officer roles:

    • Secretary — organized, detail-oriented, skilled at recordkeeping. Takes and maintains meeting minutes, ensures board notices and reports are handled per bylaws, keeps organizational records.
    • Treasurer — nonprofit finance experience preferred. Oversees financial health, works with our bookkeeper and CPA on budgets, grants tracking, and financial reporting. Chairs the finance committee. Familiarity with Form 990 and nonprofit fund accounting a plus.
    • Fundraising Chair — strong network and comfort with donor cultivation. Leads board fundraising strategy, coaches other board members, cultivates major donors, and helps grow our funder pipeline. Experience with individual giving, grants, or strategic partnerships strongly preferred.

We're also open to at-large board members who bring passion for our mission and are willing to be active ambassadors.

    The ideal candidate has:

    • Deep alignment with our mission and values (Connection, Compassion, Community, Capacity, Authentic, Accountable, Committed)
    • Passion for intergenerational connection and celebrating underrepresented communities
    • Willingness to be an active ambassador — talking up Stoop Stories, making introductions, and attending events
    • A network they're willing to leverage for sponsors, donors, and partners
    • Nonprofit board or governance experience or comparable action-oriented leadership (a plus, not required)
    • A collaborative mindset and comfort in intergenerational, diverse spaces
    • Curiosity, integrity, and dedication

    Responsibilities:

    • Attend quarterly board meetings (roughly 90 minutes each, virtual or in-person)
    • Serve on at least one committee (fundraising, finance, governance, etc.)
    • Participate actively in ambassadorship — introductions, event attendance, storytelling
    • Contribute to fundraising through personal giving and network engagement (participation matters more than amount — we work with each board member to define what's meaningful and realistic for them)
    • Serve a 3-year term, renewable
    • Make Stoop Stories a philanthropic priority
    • Uphold the board's fiduciary duties of care, loyalty, and commitment

    What's in it for you?

    • Help shape a young, growing nonprofit at a formative moment
    • Build meaningful relationships across generations, neighborhoods, and industries
    • Deepen your own network through our community of storytellers, artists, and advocates
    • Be part of an award-winning, mission-driven team building something genuinely new
    • Contribute to reducing loneliness and increasing compassion and joy in NYC
    • Free or discounted tickets, software, and other perks.
    • Good karma!

    Application deadline: August 22, 2026

To apply, please submit a résumé and a short note (one paragraph is plenty) about why Stoop Stories resonates with you and which role you're most interested in. Interviews will be scheduled in late August, with new members joining in September.

We are also looking for interns and volunteers across production, outreach, editorial, business strategy, and fundraising, as well as an IT support volunteer, budget manager, and social media manager. If you'd like to get involved another way, let us know! https://www.stoopstories.com/joinus Thanks!
