The Calaveras Library Literacy Program supports incarcerated individuals in obtaining their GED, improving their literacy skills, and preparing for success upon release. This position will assist current inmates in reaching their personal educational goals.
The role requires working within the local adult detention facility, supporting vetted low‑level offenders one or two days a week for approximately two hours. A background check and additional training will be required.
The Calaveras County Literacy Program strives to meet learners where they are and provide learner‑led support to adults in our community who want to achieve more. Through education a learners will develop positive relationships with the community and strengthens essential skills.
According to the Center for American Progress (Alpha Ciallo, May 28, 2020), “Adult illiteracy directly affects an individual’s employment options, likelihood to live in poverty, likelihood to be incarcerated, access to adequate health care and health outcomes, and life expectancy. Generational illiteracy makes it increasingly difficult to escape these circumstances, and millions of Americans face this reality every day.”
Please complete the Literacy Volunteer Application on the county employment website. Your submission will be sent directly to our Human Resources department, who will then begin the onboarding process. All volunteers are fingerprinted at no cost. Individuals who wish to volunteer at the Adult Detention Facility will also be required to complete an additional background check, also provided at no cost to the applicant.
