What is a Co-Raiser?

Co-raising offers the rewarding journey of raising a future Service Dog without carrying all seven days a week by yourself. Two approved households share the responsibility on a consistent schedule they set together.

Over 10 to 14 months, you and your co-raiser work as a team to teach essential manners and expose the puppy to new experiences before they enter advanced training.

How Co-Raising Works

• Shared Care: You’ll welcome a puppy into your home on your agreed-upon set days each week.
• Teamwork: You and your co-raiser stay aligned on training exercises and progress, supported by regular classes with NEADS instructors.
• Built-in Backup: Along with your co-raiser, you’ll have access to our network of approved volunteer Dog Sitters for vacations or busy periods.
• Full Supplies Provided: NEADS provides your puppy's vest, all food, crates, toys, flea/tick/heartworm preventatives, and veterinary care at no cost to you.

Finding Your Partner

The most successful co-raising partnerships start with someone you already know and trust. We strongly encourage you to apply alongside a friend, neighbor, coworker, or family member to ensure shared routines, easy communication, and a smooth handoff schedule.

While we occasionally match approved volunteers who are looking for a co-raiser, we can't guarantee that a suitable match will be available in your area.

• You can commit to a consistent weekly schedule and communicate regularly with your co-raising partner.
• You are open to aligned training methods so the puppy receives clear, consistent guidance in both homes.
• You want to share both the joyful milestones and the day-to-day responsibilities of puppy raising.

Steps to Becoming a Co-Raiser

2. If it's a good fit, attend an orientation.
3. Schedule a home visit with NEADS staff.
4. Receive your NEADS Service Dog in Training.
