    Volunteer Opportunities

    2nd Annual Long Island Steps Against Melanoma

    Date: Sunday, September 20, 2026

    About the Event

    Steps Against Melanoma is a community-driven event that raises critical funds for melanoma research. The event brings together survivors, families, caregivers, and supporters for a meaningful and inspiring day.

    Volunteer Role Overview

    Volunteers are essential to the success of this event. They help create a welcoming, organized, and positive experience for all participants. Volunteers should be friendly, reliable, and comfortable engaging with the public.

    Available Volunteer Positions (More Opportunities Available Too!)

    Setup Team (7:00 AM to 9:00 AM)

    • Put yard signs on the pathway to give participants direction
    • Hang banners in tents
    • Setup table displays that will be used during event
    • Help volunteers unload materials from their cars

    Registration Team (8:30 AM to 10:00 AM)

    • Check in participants and assist with day-of registration
    • Distribute event materials (t-shirts, etc.)
    • Answer basic event questions
    • Ensure lines move efficiently and participants feel welcomed

    Greeters / Welcome Team (8:30 AM to 10:00 AM)

    • Welcome participants as they arrive
    • Provide directions and general event information
    • Help create a friendly and energetic atmosphere
    • Assist with crowd flow and wayfinding

    Mission & Activity Area Support (8:30 AM to 10:00 AM)

    • Help manage activity tables, sponsor areas, or mission-focused displays
    • Engage participants and answer questions when appropriate
    • Keep areas organized and stocked
    • Encourage participants to use the photo backdrop for picture opportunities
    • Hand out medals and water bottles at the finish line

    Photographer (8:30 AM to 12:00 PM)

    • Take photos to document the event
    • Photo shots list will be provided
    • Phone camera is acceptable, as long as you have a good eye!

    Teardown Team (10:30 AM to 12:00 PM)

    • Remove all yard signage from walking route and event space
    • Clean materials off all tables
    • Assist with leaving the park as clean as we found out

    Time Commitment

    Shifts vary by role but generally fall within:

    • Setup begins at 7:00 AM, volunteers may arrive later than this but the earlier the better
    • Short training at 8:30 AM for volunteers in any active roles during the event
    • Event begins at 9:00 AM, opening remarks begin at 10:00 AM
    • 5K walk begins at 10:15 AM
    • Volunteers are welcome to partake in the walk but this is not a requirement

    Qualifications

    • Positive attitude and willingness to help
    • Strong communication skills
    • Ability to work in a team environment
    • Dependable and punctual
    • Comfortable standing and being active for extended periods
