Environmental and Climate Justice Fellow

The Environmental and Climate Justice Fellow will focus on the intersection of environmental justice, climate change, and militarism. This fellowship will provide a unique opportunity to research how military activities contribute to climate change, explore sustainable alternatives, and engage in advocacy to redirect resources from defense spending toward environmental and climate justice initiatives. The fellow will support Peace Economy Project’s mission by promoting policies and practices that advance climate resilience and equity, particularly in marginalized communities.

This fellowship is ideal for individuals passionate about environmental advocacy, climate justice, and sustainable policy reform.

Responsibilities

Research and Analysis:

• Conduct research on the environmental and climate impacts of militarism, including emissions from military operations, environmental degradation caused by military activities, and resource extraction for defense purposes.
• Explore the economic and environmental benefits of reallocating military funds to green energy, sustainable infrastructure, and community-based climate resilience projects.
• Prepare reports, white papers, and policy briefs that advocate for redirecting defense spending to climate solutions, emphasizing the importance of environmental justice in addressing climate change.

Policy Advocacy:

• Assist in drafting and promoting policy proposals aimed at reducing the military’s environmental footprint and increasing investment in climate mitigation and adaptation projects.
• Support legislative advocacy efforts by engaging with policymakers, environmental organizations, and community groups to advocate for climate justice policies.
• Contribute to Peace Economy Project’s

Move the Money campaign, which advocates for budget reforms that prioritize environmental and social spending over defense.

Community Education and Outreach:

• Organize and participate in webinars, workshops, and community events focused on the links between climate change, environmental justice, and militarism.
• Collaborate on public awareness campaigns to educate communities about the environmental consequences of militarism and the need for climate-focused budget reforms.
• Assist with social media, blog posts, and other outreach efforts to raise awareness about climate justice and environmental issues.

Collaboration and Networking:

• Build relationships with environmental justice organizations, climate advocacy groups, and policymakers working on related issues.
• Attend conferences, workshops, and networking events to represent Peace Economy Project and share findings from the fellowship’s research and advocacy work.

Qualifications

• A strong commitment to environmental justice, climate action, and sustainability.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in environmental studies, sustainability, public policy, or a related field.
• Strong research and writing skills, with the ability to translate complex environmental issues into actionable policy recommendations.
• Familiarity with climate change, environmental justice, and the role of militarism in environmental degradation.
• Experience in policy research, advocacy, or legislative work is a plus.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience in public speaking or community engagement.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Understanding of climate justice frameworks, particularly in relation to marginalized and frontline communities.
• Experience with environmental advocacy or grassroots organizing.
• Familiarity with budget analysis and government spending related to climate and environmental issues.
• Knowledge of the legislative process at the federal or state level.
