The Conference Organizer / Volunteer Manager is responsible for planning and running ProtectCon, Operation Safe Escape's online conference at the intersection of domestic violence advocacy and security. This role brings together the speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and moving parts that make the event happen, and keeps everything on schedule from first planning meeting through the closing session.
This role requires strong organizational and communication skills, comfort coordinating people across time zones and organizations, and the judgment to keep a public-facing event aligned with the sensitivities of the work we do. Volunteers in this role must be dependable, proactive, and genuinely invested in protecting vulnerable populations.
ProtectCon will be held in mid-to-late October (which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month), date TBD
WHAT THE ROLE LOOKS LIKE
- Coordinates speakers end to end: outreach, scheduling, confirmations, tech checks, and day-of support.
- Conducts sponsor outreach and maintains relationships with sponsoring organizations and partners.
- Plans and tracks the conference timeline, milestones, deadlines, and deliverables.
- Recruits, schedules, and supports event volunteers, making sure everyone knows their role.
- Updates and maintains conference website content, including agenda, speaker bios, and announcements.
- Assists with running the event itself, including session moderation, platform logistics, and troubleshooting.
- Handles the other tasks that come with an event of this kind, from communications to post-event follow-up.
- Assists with marketing to the intended audiences (survivors, social workers and shelter staff, and public safety are the primary audiences)
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Experience organizing conferences, virtual events, meetups, webinars, or similar programs.
- Comfort with online event and collaboration platforms (Zoom, Teams, Discord, StreamYard, or equivalent).
- Strong written communication skills for speaker, sponsor, and volunteer outreach.
- Ability to manage a timeline, keep multiple threads moving, and follow up without being asked.
- Basic comfort updating website content (no development experience required).
- Familiarity with the security community, the nonprofit world, or the challenges faced by survivors of abuse, stalking, and trafficking is a plus.
