A Faith That Does Justice · Greater Boston · Remote and in-person options.

Four hours a week. Thirty sessions. Learners who can finally speak up.

Adults across Greater Boston are working toward something specific: a better job, a citizenship interview, a parent-teacher conference they can navigate without an interpreter. What stands between them and that goal is often just English — and someone willing to teach them.

A Faith That Does Justice is now accepting volunteers for our Fall/Winter 2026 ESOL session, a 30-session program running across four concurrent tracks. Classes meet mornings and evenings, in person and online, so there is very likely a track that fits your week.

You do not need to be a teacher. Our lesson plans are already written. What we need is someone reliable, warm, and willing to show up.

    Choose your track

    1. Virtual from 9:30am to 11:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays
    2. Virtual from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays
    3. In person from 9:30am to 11:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays
    4. In person from 6:30pm to 8:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays

Time commitment: 4 class hours per week, plus preparation time, across 30 sessions, plus a brief orientation before the session begins. No classes are held during vacation and holiday periods. Volunteers commit to a single track for the full cycle — consistency is what makes the classroom work for our adult students.

Application deadline: August 31, 2026. Orientation begins September 8, 2026.

    Two ways to serve

Teacher. You lead the class using our existing lesson plans, set the pace, and keep the room moving. Best suited to volunteers with teaching, tutoring, or group facilitation experience — though a first-time teacher with the right temperament often does beautifully.

Teaching Assistant. You work alongside the teacher, giving one-on-one attention to students who need an extra pass at a concept, and helping quieter learners find their voice. This is a superb entry point if you are new to ESOL. Many of our teachers started here.

    What we are looking for

    • Comfort and confidence in written and spoken English
    • Patience, warmth, and genuine curiosity about people whose lives look different from yours
    • Reliability across the full session — our students plan their weeks around these classes
    • Teaching experience is welcome but not required. Bilingual volunteers are especially encouraged to apply; knowing what it is to learn a language is its own qualification.

What you can expect from us

    • Ready-made lesson plans and materials — no prep from scratch
    • Orientation and ongoing support from our ESOL program team
    • A cohort of fellow volunteers to compare notes with
    • Documentation of volunteer hours for students, employers, or professional development

    Why our volunteers stay

Most people who volunteer with our ESOL program sign up for one cycle and end up staying for several. What they describe is not abstract: it is the week a student, who spent two sessions silent, asks a question out loud. It is a student telling the class she got the job. Language work is slow, and then all at once it is visible — and you were in the room for it.

A Faith That Does Justice is an all-volunteer interfaith nonprofit. Everyone you will work with is here for the same reason you are.

    Ready to join us?

Apply through Idealist, or email esoladmin@faith-justice.org with a short note about which track fits your schedule and whether you are interested in teaching or assisting. We will follow up within 5 business days to talk it through — no formal interview, just a conversation.

Questions first? Reach out. We are happy to walk you through what a typical class looks like before you commit.

Applications for the Fall/Winter 2026 session close August 31, 2026.
