Lit Fest 2026: Pre-Event Support Volunteer
Event: 1st Annual Literacy Festival: Celebrating the Power of Black Literacy & Liberation Date: Saturday, February 28, 2026 | 10am–4pmLocation: Gary Comer Youth Center | 7200 S. Ingleside, Chicago
About Lit Fest
Lit Fest is a vibrant, multidisciplinary Black History Month event that reimagines literacy as more than words on a page. Through immersive workshops, performances, and conversations, we explore literacy as a pathway to self-expression, wellness, financial empowerment, digital fluency, and cultural preservation. We invite families, educators, artists, and young people to connect, learn, and celebrate in community—honoring the legacy of Black storytelling and the power of lifelong learning.
The Opportunity: Pre-Event Support
Help us build momentum and lay the groundwork for a successful Lit Fest. As a Pre-Event Support volunteer, you'll be essential to our behind-the-scenes preparation, ensuring every detail is coordinated, every partner is engaged, and every community member knows about this celebration of Black literacy and liberation.
Responsibilities
Administrative Support:
- Coordinating schedules, timelines, and deliverables
- Managing volunteer check-ins and assignments
- Supporting documentation and record-keeping
- Tracking tasks and ensuring accountability
- Organizing files and maintaining project organization
Vendor & Partner Follow-Up:
- Communicating with workshop facilitators and speakers
- Following up with vendors and service providers
- Confirming participation and gathering materials
- Coordinating logistics with partners
- Maintaining vendor contact lists and agreements
Resource Tables & Event Logistics:
- Planning resource table setup and materials
- Coordinating with community organizations and partners
- Organizing giveaways and promotional items
- Preparing signage and materials for resource distribution
- Managing inventory and supplies
Sponsorships:
- Supporting sponsor coordination and communication
- Organizing sponsor benefits and recognition materials
- Preparing sponsorship packages and acknowledgments
- Tracking sponsor commitments and deliverables
- Assisting with sponsor activation planning
Marketing & Advertising:
- Creating and sharing social media content
- Designing promotional materials and graphics
- Writing newsletters, press releases, and event announcements
- Coordinating with media partners
- Managing event promotion across digital and print channels
- Developing messaging that reflects our mission and values
What We're Looking For
- Detail-oriented and highly organized
- Strong communication and coordination skills
- Comfortable with spreadsheets, project management, and documentation
- Experience in event coordination, marketing, or nonprofit operations (formal or informal)
- Creative thinker with problem-solving abilities
- Passionate about youth empowerment and community engagement
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities
- Reliable, accountable, and committed to deadlines

When submitting your interest, please provide:

- Which volunteer role(s) you're interested in
- Your availability (hours per week, preferred dates/times)
- A brief description of your skills and experience relevant to the role
- Why you're passionate about supporting Lit Fest and GCYC's mission
