Position Summary
Gender Freedom Society is seeking Volunteer Prison Advocacy Support Specialists to assist with general prison advocacy work supporting incarcerated transgender and gender-diverse individuals. This volunteer role provides essential program support under the supervision of advocacy leadership and helps ensure our prison advocacy efforts are organized, ethical, and effective.
This position is ideal for individuals who want to contribute meaningfully to prison advocacy work while operating within clear boundaries and structured guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide general support for prison advocacy activities as assigned
- Assist with preparing letters, summaries, and advocacy-related documentation
- Conduct basic research on correctional policies and procedures
- Organize and incoming information for review by senior advocates
- Support internal case tracking and administrative workflows
- Help compile timelines, summaries, and internal reports
- Participate in required trainings related to confidentiality, safety, and advocacy practices
- Follow all documentation, privacy, and escalation protocols
Role Boundaries
- Volunteers do not independently contact correctional facilities or staff
- Volunteers do not make case determinations or escalation decisions
- Volunteers do not provide legal advice
- All work is performed under supervision and within defined program guidelines
Qualifications
- Interest in civil rights, prison advocacy, or LGBTQ+ justice
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to follow structured procedures and guidance
- Reliability and attention to detail
- Comfort working with sensitive subject matter
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Lived experience may be considered in place of formal education or professional experience
