Be a Voice for a Child: Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)

Every child in foster care deserves one consistent adult focused solely on advocating for their best interests. As a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) volunteer, you are appointed by the Superior Court through the King County Dependency CASA Program to advocate for the best interest of a child involved in a dependency case due to abuse or neglect.

CASA volunteers serve as independent officers of the court. Their role is to conduct an objective assessment and provide fact-based recommendations to the court regarding the child’s safety, stability, and permanency.

    What You’ll Do

    • Meet with the child regularly, at least monthly where practical
    • Gather information by speaking with parents, relatives, caregivers, educators, and service providers
    • Review case records and relevant documentation
    • Submit timely written court reports with recommendations
    • Appear at court hearings involving the child
    • Monitor court orders and report significant changes
    • Maintain regular contact with your assigned CASA Supervisor
    • Complete required training and ongoing education

    Minimum Requirements

    • Must pass criminal background check and fingerprinting
    • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Comfortable with technology and report writing
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality, objectivity, and professional boundaries
    • 24-month minimum commitment

    Why This Role Matters

Children involved in the juvenile dependency system often experience instability, uncertainty, and multiple changes in placements and schools. A CASA volunteer provides one consistent, dedicated adult focused solely on their best interests throughout the court process.

We value volunteers from diverse backgrounds because the children we serve come from diverse communities. Advocates who bring different lived experiences and perspectives help children feel seen and understood and help address disparities within the child welfare system.

Your presence can help ensure each child’s voice, history, and needs are thoughtfully considered as important decisions about their future are made.
