Position Title: Volunteer German Translator (Website Localization & Educational Content)
Location: Remote / Virtual (Global)
Commitment: Flexible, approx. 3–5 hours per week
About Us
The Center for the Advancement of Languages, Education, and Communities (CALEC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting multilingualism, empowering multilingual families, and fostering cross-cultural understanding. We believe language is a critical life skill. In alignment with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, our programs seek to protect cultural heritage, reduce inequality, and provide equitable, high-quality bilingual education resources.
Read in 2 Languages (Ri2L) is CALEC’s flagship digital book platform. Ri2L’s mission is to offer the gift of biliteracy to children, schools, and linguistic communities worldwide. By offering an online library of multilingual books, recorded native-speaker read-alouds, and pedagogical activities, Ri2L supports language maintenance and bridges cultural divides for elementary through high school students.
Position Overview
We are looking for a passionate, detail-oriented Volunteer German Translator to help us localize the Ri2L website into German. As we expand our global community, providing a seamless interface will empower German-speaking families, heritage language learners, and educators to easily navigate our platform and access our extensive library of bilingual books.
If you are a linguistic champion who believes that literacy is a human right, this is your opportunity to use your skills for global impact!
Why We Insist on Human Translation (Why We Need You!)
In an era dominated by AI and automated tools, we are intentionally choosing human hearts and minds for this project. Machine translation might be fast, but it lacks a soul. Here is why your human touch is indispensable to us:
- Cultural Nuance & Warmth: Our platform serves children, parents, and educators. Automated translators often sound rigid, sterile, or overly academic. We need a human voice that brings warmth, encouragement, and natural flow to the user experience.
- Context is Everything: German is a beautifully complex language with deep morphological and contextual layers. AI notoriously struggles with the subtle shifts in meaning required for educational and child-centered content, often resulting in awkward or inaccurate phrasing.
- Preserving Heritage: Language preservation is about identity. A human translator understands the cultural pride wrapped up in bilingual education and can ensure our platform feels genuinely welcoming to the German-speaking diaspora, not just "auto-generated."
What you will do:
- Translate Website Content: Translate user interface (UI) elements, navigation menus, platform instructions, and organizational descriptions from English into German.
- Culturally Nuanced Adaptation: Ensure translations are not just literal, but culturally accurate, accessible, and engaging for parents, educators, and children.
- Proofreading & QA: Review and edit translated German content for grammatical precision, proper formatting, and tonal consistency across the platform.
- Collaboration: Coordinate remotely with the CALEC/Ri2L digital media and editorial teams to ensure seamless integration of the German layout.
Qualifications
- Bilingual Excellence: Native or professional-level fluency in both German and English.
- Writing Polish: Exceptional written communication skills in German, with an eye for nuance, tone, and grammar.
- Experience: Prior experience in translation, website localization, or educational content creation is highly preferred, though talented language students are welcome to apply.
- Tech-Savvy: Familiarity with Google Workspace, Slack, or basic Content Management Systems (CMS) is a plus.
- Mission Alignment: A deep commitment to CALEC’s vision of empowering multilingual communities and promoting social inclusion through language.
Commitment & Impact
- Time: Remote and highly flexible. We estimate a commitment of 3–5 hours per week for a duration of 2–3 months, or until the core localization project is complete.
- Impact: Your work will directly give thousands of German-speaking children and educators access to critical biliteracy tools.
- Growth: Gain hands-on website localization and translation experience with an internationally recognized educational nonprofit.
