The American Red Cross operates shelters for people displaced by disasters, providing safety, comfort, and essential resources. As a Shelter Service Associate, you’ll help ensure families have the support they need during one of the most challenging times of their lives.
What Volunteers Do
- Provide comfort, support, and guidance to people displaced by disasters
- Assist with shelter operations, including:
- Welcoming guests and registration
- Serving meals
- Managing dormitories and supplies
- Providing information and resources
- Adapt to dynamic, fast-changing environments as needs arise
- Complete virtual, self-paced training to prepare for the role
Requirements
- Age 18+
- Willingness and ability to volunteer in-person at disaster shelters before, during, or after an event
- Commitment to local disaster shifts (4–12 hours per shift) or extended deployments (14 days with 8–12 hour shifts)
- Patience, adaptability, and excellent customer service skills
- Background check and orientation completion required
Time Commitment
- Flexible scheduling with weekday and weekend shifts (day or evening)
- Typical shelter shifts last 12 hours
- Recurring opportunities based on availability
