    Step in when disaster strikes and help families feel safe, supported, and cared for during their toughest moments.

    The American Red Cross operates shelters for people displaced by disasters, providing safety, comfort, and essential resources. As a Shelter Service Associate, you’ll help ensure families have the support they need during one of the most challenging times of their lives.

    What Volunteers Do

      • Provide comfort, support, and guidance to people displaced by disasters
      • Assist with shelter operations, including:
      • Welcoming guests and registration
      • Serving meals
      • Managing dormitories and supplies
      • Providing information and resources
      • Adapt to dynamic, fast-changing environments as needs arise
      • Complete virtual, self-paced training to prepare for the role

    Requirements

      • Age 18+
      • Willingness and ability to volunteer in-person at disaster shelters before, during, or after an event
      • Commitment to local disaster shifts (4–12 hours per shift) or extended deployments (14 days with 8–12 hour shifts)
      • Patience, adaptability, and excellent customer service skills
      • Background check and orientation completion required

    Time Commitment

      • Flexible scheduling with weekday and weekend shifts (day or evening)
      • Typical shelter shifts last 12 hours
      • Recurring opportunities based on availability
