Director of Operations @ Statistics Without Borders

Why does this role exist?

This role exists to enable and facilitate the work of Statistics Without Borders volunteers and teams. As part of their responsibilities, the Operations Director is responsible for building and leading the Operations department at SWB. The Operations Director is also a member of the SWB Executive Committee and will contribute meaningfully to strategic SWB work that extends beyond operations.

What will I do? In the coming months, you'll

• Lead the Operations department to a steady state of providing sustained, predictable, and resilient technical support and incident management for SWB.
• Design, manage, and evolve as needed the technical architecture of SWB’s technology and data stack.
• Develop, implement, and maintain a data management strategy that includes security and privacy concerns and that aligns with organizational goals, team needs, and regulations.
• Establish and implement an organizational knowledge management strategy to ensure resilience.
• Establish a business intelligence capability to enable informed decision-making.

What experience are you looking for?

Ideally, you'll have:

• A solid grasp of technology systems with an architecture-oriented approach to problem-solving.
• Demonstrated understanding of project workflows and client engagement models used in professional services or consulting environments; SWB-specific project knowledge is a bonus.
• Demonstrated experience as a strategic, creative thinker who can develop effective solutions in the face of ambiguity and evolving needs.
• Exceptional organizational and planning skills with a proven history of delivering work on time.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

It's an added bonus if you have:

• An up-to-date understanding of regulatory and contractual challenges related to data-centric professional services.
• Familiarity with core project management methodologies and enterprise process development concepts.
• Experience with operational strategy and execution in professional services or IT contexts.
• Experience working with not-for-profit organizations and/or leading teams across time zones.

What is the expected time commitment?

This role will likely take 8-10 hours per week. Directors serve an indefinite term, as established in the SWB Charter. Candidates should plan to serve for at least 1 year; ideal candidates plan to serve for 2 years. This position is fully remote and can be based in any time zone.
