Volunteer Opportunity: Become a Docent at the TEP Center

The TEP Center is seeking dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to serve as docents and help bring the powerful history of New Orleans school desegregation to life for visitors from around the world.

Docents play a vital role in advancing the mission of the Leona Tate Foundation for Change by welcoming guests, guiding tours, and facilitating meaningful conversations about the experiences of Leona Tate, Gail Etienne, and Tessie Prevost. This is an opportunity to engage directly with students, educators, and community members while contributing to an important, place-based learning environment rooted in civil rights history.

    Volunteer Commitment:

    • Availability Monday through Friday between 9:30 AM and 4:30 PM (CST)
    • Ability to commit to a consistent weekly schedule (flexible shifts available within these hours)

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Greet and orient visitors to the TEP Center
    • Lead or support guided tours for school groups and the general public
    • Share accurate historical information and encourage thoughtful dialogue
    • Assist with daily operations to ensure a welcoming and organized environment

    Ideal Candidates:

    • Have an interest in history, education, or social justice
    • Are comfortable speaking with diverse audiences, including students
    • Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Are reliable, punctual, and collaborative

Training and ongoing support will be provided to ensure docents feel confident and prepared in their role.

By volunteering as a docent, you are not only supporting the daily work of the TEP Center—you are helping to preserve and share a critical chapter of American history while inspiring future generations.

We welcome individuals who are ready to learn, engage, and serve as ambassadors of this important story.
