Save A Forgotten Equine (SAFE) is a horse rescue organization based near Woodinville/Maltby Washington, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and retraining horses suffering from neglect or abuse. Established in 2005, SAFE collaborates with Animal Control agencies in the King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties to protect and provide care for vulnerable horses. SAFE specializes in equine rehabilitation, offering professional veterinary care, nutrition, and training to help horses regain their health and prepare for long-term homes. Utilizing horsemanship practices inspired by Buck Brannaman and Joel Connor, SAFE ensures horses develop trust and confidence in their interactions with humans. SAFE remains committed to finding permanent, caring homes for their horses and conducts annual follow-up visits to ensure their safety and well-being.

    Saturday Gardening/Landscaping Team!

SAFE Horse Rescue is seeking dedicated and energetic volunteers to assist with gardening and landscaping. This is a highly physical role that directly supports the well-being of our rescue horses.

This group will do light to medium duty tasks like trimming and cleaning fence lines, fallen branches, light weed whacking, pruning, raking, cleaning and organizing our storage spaces, lawn cleanup and mowing. Expect to get dirty and have fun! This team meets on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm and is pretty flexible in that you are welcome to join once or twice a month, or every Saturday.

    Volunteer Requirements:

    • Must be 16 years or older to volunteer independently
    • Volunteers aged 8-15 are welcome with a parent/guardian volunteering alongside them
    • A virtual orientation and training are required for all new volunteers and are offered regularly each month

If you’re passionate about animal welfare and ready to contribute in a meaningful way, we’d love to have you on our team!

    What makes us SAFE?

In 2022, the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to Save a Forgotten Equine in Redmond, WA. SAFE joins over 215 other sanctuaries, rescues, rehabilitation, and transition centers in upholding standards of best practice in the animal welfare and protection industry.

Accreditation signifies that Save a Forgotten Equine (SAFE) meets GFAS’s rigorous and peer-reviewed equine care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognize Save a Forgotten Equine as an exceptional organization.

“SAFE is very proud to have achieved Accreditation from GFAS,” said Bonnie Hammond Executive Director for SAFE. “We hold ourselves to a very high standard of equine care and nonprofit governance, and it is gratifying to have those standards validated by an organization like GFAS.”
