About Us

The National Judicial Institute (NJI) is an independent, non-profit organization that coordinates and delivers judicial education programming to Canada’s judiciary. The NJI has approximately 50 permanent staff members and a number of Judicial Associates who provide part-time educational support to the Institute.

The NJI is a bilingual institution located in Ottawa operating throughout Canada and internationally. Under judicial leadership, work within Canada focuses on the design and delivery of courses forming part of a broad education curriculum to judges across Canada together with supporting educational resources, such as an electronic library, electronic bench books and hard copy publications. Both in-person and online courses are offered. The NJI also offers an innovative computer training program. The international division is the executing agency for several international projects in the rule of law and judicial reform area. It also coordinates the Judicial Educators Network, which facilitates the involvement of Canadian judges internationally and the development of partnerships with overseas judicial education organizations.
