Description

Oakland International High School is a public high school in Oakland, California that serves 100% refugee & immigrant students. We are dedicated to supporting our multilingual learners to not only acquire the English Language but to also further their academic skills and the tools they need to graduate high school and achieve future success in college and career. We also understand how challenging this may be if we also do not provide and support the wraparound needs of our students and families as they transition into their new U.S. schools and homes.

We are a dynamic, diverse organization dedicated to educational equity, social justice, and immigrant rights. In partnership with Safe Passages, we are seeking SIX AmeriCorps positions to join our dedicated team of professionals for an 11 month-long term, supporting our literacy, tutoring, and other student support needs.

Academic Support AmeriCorps Members (6 positions)

Goal: To provide academic support, mentoring and tutoring OIHS’s newly-arrived immigrant students, supplementing support during school hours and after school

Key Responsibilities

  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to support students with limited and/or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) and assisting students with class assignments
  • Provide academic support through individual and small group tutoring in the library during class pull-outs and through various after school programs like tutoring 
  • Attend and actively participate in staff professional development meetings and retreats
  • Participate in monthly early literacy/phonics training
  • Plan and implement after-school student activities to enrich the student body
  • Provide support to teachers by setting up work areas and displays, operating audio-visual equipment, distributing papers and supplies
  • Gather and provide data that will be used by teachers, staff and researchers to assess students and teaching methods used in the classroom/school
  • Communicate expectations, provide guidance and show an active interest in student progress while striving to develop a rapport and serve as a positive role model for students and others.
  • Perform clerical duties such as making copies, scoring papers, recording data, prepare and maintain files and beautification of community spaces as assigned.
  • Administer phonics assessments throughout 3-4 times a year and ELPAC speaking test in the spring semester
  • Support student celebratory programs: Thank You Tickets, Honor Rolls, and etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to and interest in working with diverse immigrant communities in an educational context; Interest in and dedication to educational equity, social justice and immigrant rights
  • Demonstrates ability to effectively engage and support adolescents, in both group and individual settings
  • Strong organizational capacity and the ability to effectively plan and coordinate projects with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in a busy, dynamic environment; flexible to immediately pivot when priorities change
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively
  • Commitment to Safe Passages Elev8 AmeriCorps program; ability to commit to a full year of service at Oakland International High School
  • Proof of tuberculosis clearance and Full COVID-19 Vaccine 
  • LiveScan background check clearance
  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Proof of citizenship or legal permanent resident status 
  • Commitment to the full term of service

This is a full-time, 11 month, stipended AmeriCorps position expected to run from beginning of August 2024-end of June 2025.

Benefits include:
