ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

Public Rights Project (PRP) is an 501c3 non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 2017 by Jill Habig, an Ashoka award-winning fellow and former civil rights attorney. PRP is a fully-remote team of 23 working across nine states. Some of its key funders include Ford Foundation, Skoll Foundation, Crankstart, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Democracy Fund.

  • Vision: Envision a democracy built by the people that delivers equity and justice – where every community has a government fighting for their civil rights.
  • Mission: To close the gap between the promise of our laws and the lived reality of marginalized communities. PRP works hand in hand with local, state and tribal governments across the U.S. to equitably enforce laws that protect people's civil and human rights.
  • Impact: Since its founding in 2017, PRP has trained 131 prosecutors and government lawyers in 24 states in the principles and practices of equitable implementation, built a partner network of over 670 government offices, elected officials, and community based organizations in 43 states, secured court victories on police accountability, abortion, immigrant, workers', and voting rights, and helped to recover over $46 million in relief for marginalized people.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Public Rights Project is seeking a Chief Communications and Marketing Officer (CCMO) to lead in shaping and executing the communications and marketing strategy for the organization. Reporting to the President and serving on the executive leadership team, the CCMO will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategic communications and marketing strategies to enhance PRP's brand, market positioning and overall strategic objectives. The CCMO will build and manage a communications and marketing team of 3-5.

The ideal candidate is an experienced communications professional with a proven track record of building and executing successful, data-driven integrated communications and marketing strategy to drive growth and increased engagement. This is a great opportunity for a communications leader passionate about leveraging communications as a force for positive change and making an impact at the intersection of law, government, and social justice.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve on PRP's executive leadership team, help shape PRP's overall organizational strategy and message, and incorporate communications and marketing into serving PRP's strategic objectives.
  • Develop and manage a multi-channel integrated communications and marketing strategy that leverages owned and earned channels, engages key audiences, and yields measurable leads and action.
  • Own PRP's brand, organizational voice, and visual identity. Define org-wide messaging, develop tailored narratives for specific audiences, and provide guidance and oversight to ensure alignment and consistency with PRP's core messaging across a range of outward-facing materials. Work collaboratively with other team leads to develop language and messaging that connects PRP's core messaging with team specific needs.
  • Lead a communications and thought leadership strategy that elevates PRP's brand, increases its reach, and further establishes expertise and credibility.
  • Manage and support external contractors including PRP's public relations agency.
  • Oversee the development and execution of segmented email campaigns, website content and strategy, and social media content to educate, engage, and activate key audiences. Key digital platforms beyond our website include LinkedIn and Mighty Networks, with the potential for additional platforms as needed.
  • Manage and help grow PRP's communications and marketing team, including recruitment, hiring and professional development for team members.
  • Develop and oversee processes for effective cross-organizational collaboration related to communications and marketing functions.
  • Utilize and support PRP teams and partners in communicating effectively about the organization and its work.
  • Oversee communications-related collaboration with PRP's clients, partners, and third-party validators, including government offices and elected officials.
  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer to develop and execute a donor communications strategy that helps PRP to acquire, engage, and retain supporters and donors.
  • Partner with the Chief Program Officer to develop a communications and marketing strategy to facilitate the growth of PRP U, our fellowship and training elearning program, and other programs (Election Protection Hub, etc.) in order to engage more local government officials in our work and scale PRP's network and reach.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience working in a government office and/or with government/elected officials/candidates for public office, such as at a national advocacy organization, highly preferred.
  • At least 5 years of people management experience, with a track record of building and managing diverse teams to achieve outcomes while fostering growth and learning.
  • Experience creating, implementing, and evaluating a multi-channel, multi-issue, segmented communications strategy, via earned and owned media.
  • Experience leading core narrative and message development for campaigns, public officials, or organizations.
  • Proficiency in core public relations functions, including media outreach and content creation, and a foundational understanding of the current media landscape.
  • Experience running digital marketing campaigns to generate leads and/or donations.
  • Experience developing metrics for success for communications and marketing efforts, including benchmarking and key performance indicators.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams, demonstrating excellent communication and project management skills.
