MRNY is a multi-service organization.  Our member-led organizing committees -- which work on the issues named above -- implement strategies to combat shared problems, and develop leadership and the capacity for civic participation. We also provide an array of high-quality bilingual services: We offer English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish-language literacy, computer literacy, citizenship preparation, and in-school and after-school youth programs. We have a robust legal program that offers direct representation across a spectrum of practice areas, including employment law, immigration law, housing and benefits, and TGNCIQ civil rights; we also take on impact litigation as a strategy for achieving broad change. Our health program offers facilitated enrollment into health insurance programs and SNAP benefits, a community health worker home visit program, nutrition education and emergency food pantries, health care navigation, and more."

Make the Road States (MRstates) is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Nevada, this in addition to New York, that serves to uplift the voices of working-class, immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color across the Make the Roads umbrella. From an operational spectrum it serves as the Finance and Human Resources Compliance Officers for the umbrella at large. 

The Human Resources Department serves the Make the Road States umbrella which includes, in addition to New York, Connecticut, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Intern will learn about:

  • Human Resources 101- Learn about the top 10 do’s and don’ts of the department and the field.
  • Human Resources Document Retention and Confidentiality – Learn about the importance of paper trail, how it should be filed and, who should have access to the information
  • Conflict and Resolution – Learn about managing different personality and how to create neutral ground where the diversity of all can cohabitate 
  • Project Management – Learn about the different projects that are managed in the department; how to do project design analysis using the logic model; what it takes to effectively oversee a project from beginning to end.
  • Team management and effective teamwork- Learn about collaborative working styles and best practices for nonprofit organizations.
  • Diversity Management - Learn about non-profit organizational culture, and how create assessments and recommendations remaining respectful to each individual culture
  • Feedback, Feedforward and evaluation

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Assist with EE pay notices and payroll reports
  • Assist with job ad postings
  • Assist with creating soft and hard EE files
  • Assist with benefits management
  • Assist in all HR administrative duties
  • Prepare welcome packages for new hire
  • Assist with managing various shared databases
  • Participate in planning and attend staff meetings and trainings
  • Participate in different projects, at different level, whenever necessary
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the U.S
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with an FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior first day of employment.
  • Familiarity with, and commitment to, human rights and social justice issues
  • 1 to 2 years of administrative exposure or experience
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong interest in and commitment to working with the Spanish speaking/ immigrant community through the lens of nonprofit Operations in Human Resources
  • Bilingual (Spanish/ English)

Salary and Benefits:

MRStates offers sick time. The hourly range for this position is $16.00 to $18.00.
