JOB SUMMARY:

Assist in the coordination and delivery of disaster services to individuals and communities. To provide assistance in all facets of disaster services, including planning and collaborating with government and non-government partners to effectively coordinate services.

Works with National Emergency Disaster Services Director, Program Specialist, NCRD staff, and Salvation Army officers and staff. Assumes other duties as assigned by the Emergency Disaster Services Program Specialist. Demonstrates dependability through attendance and punctuality.

  • Provide basic information and answer questions regarding Disaster Services.
  • Participate in office and department meetings, and other meetings as appropriate; participate in community/partner meetings and networking.
  • Assist with National Emergency Disaster Services newsletters.
  • Assist with compiling statistics and stories/new articles for reports.
  • Attend and complete educational opportunities when appropriate.
  • Work on personal, office, and department goals.
  • Data entry as requested.

Education and Experience:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in the areas of public safety, emergency management, or related field.
  • Experience working in public safety or emergency management is preferred.
  • Understanding of the delivery of disaster services preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills; including organizational, proofreading, editing, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must complete the following: “Introduction to The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster” course within 15 days of the date of appointment.

  • Ensures all SharePoint files are maintained in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Performs other related work as required and assigned by immediate supervisor and/or the section head and/or department heads. Must demonstrate dependability through attendance and punctuality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate student pursuing a degree in in the areas of public safety, emergency management, or related field.
  • Previous experience working in a professional office setting preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency with Office 365 suite and other remote collaboration tools.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work within a team.
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple external audiences.
  • Ability to work on multiple deadline projects effectively and efficiently without becoming frustrated or disorganized.
  • Ability to gather, compile, and assemble information into a final professional appearance product.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work to accomplish work in compliance with quality standards and deadlines.
  • Ability to determine the most effective and efficient method to accomplish work objectives and goals and to work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain an efficient and organized filing system to ensure that items can be retrieved in a timely manner.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective and professional relationships with officers and employees at National Headquarters and throughout the territories.
  • Ability to maintain the confidential nature of the department.

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and effectivelycommunicate the English language.
  • Ability to enter and extract information into a computer.
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to operate various general office equipment including a telephone, computer, scanner, copier, calculator, digital camera, and digital video camera.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail with constant breaks in concentration associated with answering phones or speaking in person to individuals.
  • Ability to effectively navigate the internet and to use as a key research tool.
  • Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Limited amount of physical effort required associated with walking, standing, lifting, and carrying light objects (less than 25 lbs.) 5-10% of work time.
  • Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking.

DISASTER KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

A disaster intern candidate for this position should complete one of the following FEMA Independent Study courses:

  • Introduction to Incident Command System (IS-100)
  • Emergency Planning (IS-235)
  • Role of Voluntary Agencies in Emergency Management (IS-288)
  • National Incident Management System – NIMS (IS-700.a)
  • National Response Framework, An Introduction (IS-800.b)
  • Emergency Support Function (ESF) #6 – Mass Care, Emergency Assistance, Housing, and Human Services (IS-806)

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is an on-site position.
