The Opportunity

HLA’s Paralegal/Intake Coordinator for our Access to Care and Coverage Practice (ACC) is the first point of contact for most people seeking assistance from this department. They work closely with clients and provide critical support for HLA attorneys. This position is also responsible for administrative support in furtherance of HLA’s mission.

The ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written language skills in English and Spanish or English and Portuguese and have experience working with clients in vulnerable situations who face challenges to accessing public benefits or services. This position will report to a Supervising Attorney.

Responsibilities 

  • Intake: Conduct initial intake phone calls with prospective clients and manage follow up correspondence; manage and triage inquiries from individuals seeking assistance; perform eligibility screenings; manage client waitlist; refer callers to other applicable organizations if HLA cannot assist with a specific issue.
  • Case support: Secure signed release forms; gather and organize client documents; maintain case files in case management system; interact with referral organizations; draft correspondence in consultation with attorneys; communicate with medical providers, health insurance agencies, billers, collection agencies, and other agencies as needed; conduct background research as appropriate.
  • Administrative support: Order supplies; handle outgoing and incoming mail; scan documents; coordinate with operations staff on administrative matters such as email and phone systems and other miscellaneous non-legal matters; participate in hiring and onboarding for new staff.

In addition, requirements specific to this position are:

  • Legal or consumer assistance background;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software;
  • Sense of humor and enthusiasm for public interest advocacy;
  • Patience on the phone, particularly with people in crisis;
  • Meticulous organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities;
  • Bi- or multi-lingual proficiency strongly desired, specifically in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and/or Cape Verdean Creole, but other languages are welcome, as well.

Salary Range

$48,000 - $52,500 annualized.

  • Outside Health Insurance Reimbursement 
  • If you obtain health insurance elsewhere (typically through a parent, spouse or domestic partner), you are eligible for a taxable reimbursement.
  • Fitness Reimbursement 
  • $150 per year 
  • Parental Leave 
  • Up to 12 weeks of protected leave to bond with your new child
