TITLE: Executive Director


LOCATION: Oversee Portland and Lewiston Offices. 


POSITION: This is a full time (generally 40 hour/week), salaried, exempt position. 


START DATE:      The preferred start date for this position is June 1st, 2024 with flexibility to start

earlier or later for the right candidate. Applications will be accepted until the position is 

filled.  


SUMMARY:

Youth LED Justice is a youth-led restorative justice diversion program that receives referrals for youth who have gotten in trouble with the law and/or their school. By participating in a restorative justice process and successfully completing a Restorative Plan (an action plan created by affected parties to repair the harm and build up supports), youth are diverted from punitive consequences. At the heart of YLJ is a belief in youth leadership. We train youth to serve as advocates and facilitators of these restorative processes, and turn to respondents (youth referred to our program), youth volunteers, and youth board members to inform and guide our evolving programming.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  1. Development
  2. Create funding and development strategy that increases YLJ’s programmatic capacity.
  3. Identify funding opportunities and lead efforts to secure adequate funding to ensure mission focused programming.
  4. Research grant opportunities, write and submit grant applications, and foster ongoing relationships with funders. 
  5. Ensure grant compliance and complete grant reporting.
  6. Work with the Board of Directors (the Board) to contribute to fundraising efforts, and lead a Committee dedicated to this goal.


  1. Finance:
  2. Fiscal management, prioritizing diversified funding streams, ensuring maximum resource utilization and operating within the organization’s budget.
  3. Develop annual and project budgets and projections.
  4. Project funding and expenses to assess needs.
  5. Develop systems to support program staff in monitoring spending within their regions within budget limitations. 
  6. Complete all day-to-day financial management tasks. 
  7. Review, approve, and submit expense sheets for reimbursement.
  8. Approve and monitor subcontract agreements with consultants and other community providers.
  9. Oversee the work of a bookkeeper to pay invoices and keep books up to date, as well as oversee tax filings and positive maintenance of 501c3 status.
  10. Commit to increasing staff salaries across the organization to enhance staff sustainability.


  1. Nonprofit Administration 
  2. Supervise and hire of all staff and contractors.
  3. Lead Board development, recruitment, and engagement efforts. This role will serve as the primary liaison for the Board.
  4. Work with the Board to ensure YLJ  grows and evolves in line with its values and successfully fulfills its mission into the future. 
  5. Ensure staff have the supplies and resources necessary to complete their work effectively and efficiently. 
  6. Support the development of internal administrative and HR policies and ensure the organization is compliant with policies.
  7. Develop and refine administrative systems and delegation. 


Note: YLJ is a continuously evolving social justice organization. This role may evolve in its responsibilities and scope of work to align more fully with strategic priorities. 


QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

  • Educational background and/or equivalent work experience in nonprofit administration, finance, or development preferred.
  • Experience with organizational development. 
  • Experience with or aptitude for financial management including budget development, day-to-day oversight, and regular reporting.
  • Effective fundraiser, including direct cultivation and solicitation of donations or grants from individual donors, foundations, and government.
  • Strength in leading with a collective mindset and approach, including supporting other people's leadership, taking direction from community, youth, staff team, and board.
  • Willingness to be part of a highly collaborative team.
  • A demonstrated commitment to Trauma-informed practices, Restorative Practices, Youth Leadership, and collaborative problem solving.
  • Commitment to Racial Equity in all aspects of YLJ’s programming and organizational structure. 
  • An awareness of systemic, structural, and interpersonal oppression. 
  • Ability to think critically and support a strengths-based approach to problem solving. 
  • Eagerness to work with a Board of Directors, and the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people, and work collaboratively with a team.
  • Highly organized and able to multitask.
  • Experience working with youth or young adults, and/or being able to demonstrate a commitment to youth leadership and empowerment is preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age; possess a valid Maine State Driver’s License with a clean driving record in the past 3 years for insurance purposes.
  • Must satisfactorily pass a comprehensive background check. The presence of a criminal record may not necessarily preclude an applicant from employment. 


SALARY and BENEFITS:

This is a full-time, salaried position with a range of $75,000 - $90,000  annually. This position is considered Exempt under the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act. YLJ offers a health care plan that is paid 100% by the employer, a SIMPLE IRA with 3% paid by employer, as well as generous paid time off and holidays.
