General Statement of Duties 

The Marketing and Communications Manager role is supervised by the Director of Marketing and Communications. This role will work closely with the director and the Marketing Senior Associate to foster engagement with YW Boston’s programming and raise the profile of YW Boston in our community. This work encompasses all areas of marketing including multimedia communications, public relations, advertising, print, digital, social media, and the website. The Manager will work with colleagues across the organization, including team leaders and program staff to help meet organizational goals in alignment with the strategies set by the Director of Marketing and Communications and the organization’s leadership.   

YW Boston is committed to assessing performance and implementing improvement measures to ensure high-quality programing and impact, and the Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for accurate and timely collection and input of data in YW Boston systems as well as utilizing the learnings from the data to improve the organization’s marketing and communications strategies.  

This position is remote for employees who reside over 50 miles away from the YW Boston office, located in Back Bay. For employees who reside within the 50-mile radius, the position is hybrid with a weekly requirement of at least one day attendance at the YW Boston office/on-site for team meetings, cross-team collaboration, and other activities, and a maximum of four days remote. YW Boston follows the latest guidance from the CDC and MA Department of Public Health and all employees are strongly encouraged to be fully vaccinated and boosted. 

Position Outcomes 

The successful Marketing and Communications Manager will achieve the following outcomes:  

  • Execute marketing and communications strategy established by YW Boston’s Leadership Team and the Director of Marketing and Communications to advance the organization’s mission   
  • Continue to expand YW Boston’s audience, increase awareness of our work and programs, and generate leads for revenue-generating programs 
  • Create content and collateral to support the growth of fundraising and program revenues 
  • Support collaboration between Marketing and Communications team and other departments within the organization to support YW Boston’s mission and organizational goals 
  • Execute accurate collection and timely input and analysis of data 
  • Foster and participate in inclusive learning and growth opportunities externally with partner organizations and internally with YW Boston colleagues  

Key Responsibilities 

Content Creation 

  • Produce different forms of written content, including email copy, blogs, op-eds, media releases, speeches, and other executive communications 
  • Support the production of visual marketing materials, including digital and print graphics/publications, event promotion materials, and video content 
  • Produce written and visual content for YW Boston’s social media accounts 

Content Management 

  • Manage YW Boston’s editorial and content calendars, contributing and soliciting ideas for relevant and timely content 
  • Manage and moderate YW Boston’s social media accounts 

Audience and Lead Growth 

  • Grow YW Boston’s audience and generate sales leads through targeted digital marketing, including social media advertising, Google ads, and third-party advertising opportunities 
  • Work closely with Director of Marketing and Communications to partner with sales team and identify and nurture marketing qualified leads (MQLs) 
  • Understand organization’s audience and assess communication effectiveness through data analytics 

Event Support 

  • Assist Director of Marketing and Communications in development of organizational and programmatic elements for special events from inception through promotion, media coverage, and cultivation 

Fundraising Support 

  • Develop fundraising collateral with guidance and input from the Advancement team. This includes but is not limited to event collateral such as invitations, sponsorship packets, program books, remarks, as well as helping to execute fundraising appeals and produce an annual report 

Campaign and Project Management 

  • Support YW Boston programs and initiatives by recommending and executing strategies that help programs meet their engagement and enrollment goals. This includes but is not limited to social media campaigns, email campaigns, digital and print materials, event coverage, content creation, community outreach, and project management 
  • Collaborate with Marketing Senior Associate and serve as project leader on certain marketing and communications projects 

Organizational Ambassadorship 

  • Train and support staff across the organization, as needed, on marketing and communications skills such as: email marketing (Pardot), WordPress, brand management, use of design templates, creating editorial calendars, etc.  

Additional Organizational Responsibilities 

  • Adhere to organization policies and procedures for maintaining organizational culture and transparency, including use of regularly scheduled progress meetings with supervisor, team meetings, scheduling, e-mail and other communications platforms 
  • Serve as a steward and role model of YW Boston’s shared values in all interactions with colleagues 
  • Positively represent YW Boston and serve as an ambassador for our mission in all interactions with the public 
  • Support YW Boston advancement through participation in education, outreach, donor cultivation and stewardship efforts as directed by the Vice President of Advancement 
  • Participate in organization events and perform additional tasks assigned by the Director of Marketing and Communications, the Chief Engagement Officer, and/or the President & CEO 

 Experience/Qualifications 

  • 5+ years of experience in marketing and communications role 
  • Demonstrated commitment to YW Boston’s mission to promote racial, gender, and social equity 
  • Experience with implementation of marketing strategies, including integrated communications across different channels; digital and print, paid, earned, and owned media 
  • Excellent writing and superb verbal communication skills.  
  • Experience using Canva to create graphics and video 
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated project management experience 
  • Must be able to manage a variety of projects with different timelines, exhibit flexibility in re-prioritizing, manage internal and external relationships in collaborative projects, maintain attention to detail, take direction well, in addition to taking initiative to work independently 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Experience with a range of social media platforms, social media scheduling tools, marketing analytics tools, and email marketing management 
  • Able to travel within the Greater Boston area occasionally for special events 
  • A passion for innovation, curiosity, and knowledge, including willingness to pursue independent learning, and responsibility over self-taught skills 
  • Openness to learning, improvement, and willingness to give and receive constructive feedback 
  • Knowledge of racism and sexism, and the various ways it manifests in modern day society, as well as having an awareness of one’s racial identity, personal biases, and solid understanding of one’s own history related to racism  

Preferred qualifications include: 

  • Nonprofit experience and familiarity with racial and gender equity work is desirable but not required 
  • Public relations experience  
  • Experience with web design, web development, HTML, and/or WordPress management 
  • Experience communicating persuasively about social justice issues to a variety of audiences 
  • Graphic design experience 
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite   
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar databases and CRMs 
  • Experience with Pardot or email marketing platforms 
  • Familiarity with Asana or similar project management tools

Salary scales are set according to an explicit compensation policy, and relevant market data is analyzed when setting ranges for each role. To ensure internal parity, YW Boston will analyze the candidate’s overall number of years of experience as well as relevant experience pertaining to the position and in comparison with staff in the same job group to make the offer salary. Because salary ranges are small and the internal parity review is thorough, offers are firm.
