Description

Job Description:   The CAN! Biodiversity Associate will work closely with the CAN! Foreman to  conduct urban habitat restoration activities. The CAN! Biodiversity Associate will perform duties in support of organization goals, including: working in the public right of way, private properties, and public schoolyards; planting of street trees and other perennials; irrigation of plantings; supporting soil development and other horticultural activities as needed. The CAN! Biodiversity Associate will work with the public during volunteer events, with shared responsibilities including coordination and horticultural skill-development of student, intern, and community volunteers. The Associate must adhere to company employee policies including safety standards and agreements, and conduct themselves in a respectful manner that reflects positively on community-led climate change work and Climate Action Now!.

Specific responsibilities:

  • Support CAN!’s weekly horticultural maintenance obligations, including street tree planting, irrigation activities, weeding, mulching and cleaning garden areas
  • Tree establishment: irrigation, including moving heavy hoses, filling tree bags and watering trees and other perennials in the urban environment (sidewalks and medians)
  • Soil development activities such as watering, mulching, weeding and garden clean-up including picking up litter and other debris
  • Physically strenuous work including lifting up to 50 lbs, kneeling on the ground, installing tree stakes with a stake pounder, using a pry-bar, working with heavy tools and botanical materials
  • Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols


Qualifications:

  • Preferred  candidates will have a strong passion for trees, pollinators, human rights and learning about environmental sustainability
  • Experience with horticulture or similarly related fields preferred
  • Strong candidates will be self-motivated, eager to work in the field, and will have a strong environmental education and/or horticultural background


Compensation:  

$25/hour.  3-5 full days/week - up to 40 hours/week.
