Position Department

Reports to Shelter Safety and Security Team Manager and Director of Programs

Duties and Responsibilities

The Safety Coordinator (SC) and Youth Worker (YW) roles consist of security, safety and relationship-building with guests. The security component of the role requires working primarily in the shelter’s main entry area to conduct intake with each guest. Intake procedures include asking basic intake questions, assessing the sobriety and safety of guests, checking for contraband items (weapons, drugs, etc.), and creating a welcoming shelter environment.

Security staff (SCs & YWs) will also support student-staff with de-escalating conflicts that occur in the shelter. SCs and YWs are in a unique position to support de-escalation through having a regular presence in the shelters in order to build relationships with guests and because they do not issue consequences to guests. Only student staff issue consequences for guests. SCs will collaborate with student staff in cases where one or more guests are escalated in order to respond to the situation and maintain safety at HSHS.

HSHS also offers door services for people who are not staying with us which include to-go meals, distributing supplies (clothing, blankets, personal hygiene items, etc), and connecting people with other service-providers. Safety coordinators ask people at the door about the services they are in need of in order to connect them with the relevant student-staffer and monitor the entryway to ensure that guests waiting at the door are safe and respectful.

Qualifications

Minimum

1-2 years of experience working with people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, substance use disorder, or other experience in human services OR 1-2 years of experience working with at-risk young adults.

Preferred

Strong candidates will have experience managing safety in high-risk situations and have an understanding of the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of creating a safe environment.

Strong skills in the following areas are expected: ability to work with diverse populations, ability to resolve conflict, and ability to work collaboratively.

YWs and SCs will work in collaboration with student leaders. As such, they must possess a strong commitment to social justice, knowledge of community issues and partners, and ability to collaborate with young leaders to facilitate a high quality program.
