WHO WE SEEK

We’re looking for a responsible and care-focused Summer Program Nurse to be a key member of our summer program team enabling students to have a fun and impactful summer experience. This individual will oversee the health and safety of summer program participants and perform necessary medical treatment ranging from bumps and bruises, illnesses, dispensing medication, and more. The Summer Program Nurse will  also be a liaison with parents/guardians, counselors, and summer program staff, as well as review student health information and physician orders, maintain accurate records and logs, monitor student well being, and train staff about basic illness and injury types and related action steps.

ABOUT OUR SUMMER PROGRAM

The Carroll Center welcomes students ages 7 to 21, who are blind or visually impaired with the possibility of additional disabilities, to participate in a variety of summer youth programs that empower them to develop socially, academically, and independently.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the pre-season setup of the health office, including evaluating inventory and ordering necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Create and manage a medication dispensing system for summer program staff to use with the students.
  • Administer over-the-counter medications to students throughout their stay.
  • Monitor and safely store all prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
  • Provide illness and injury management training to summer program staff. Educate about the differences between basic medical needs, complex medical conditions, and emergencies and other various health and well-being topics.
  • Review health forms and execute health protocols and standing physician approved orders with students and summer program staff.
  • Identify students with specific medical needs (caution sheets, special diets etc.) and communicate to the appropriate summer staff.
  • Assess and aid with student health and hygiene needs.
  • Execute nursing intervention for student and or staff illness, condition, or emergency attention. Make appropriate referrals and provide follow up care as warranted.
  • Conduct a medical assessment and perform immediate first aid for injuries such as bee stings, dehydration, sunburn, cuts, scrapes, and bruises.
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student illness or injury.
  • Complete and follow up on incident reports as needed.
  • Keep a daily log of student health office visits and record the administration of medication, prescribed treatments, and other health and medical needs following federal, state, and local standards.
  • Make rounds on campus checking on students, staff, and the health and safety of the program overall. Report facility and grounds health risk factors.
  • Ensure First Aid kits are stocked and maintained.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current RN or LPN license required.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working with children and youth (ages 7-19) required.
  • Previous experience as a school or camp nurse at a special needs camp is strongly preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications required.
  • Possess excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and technology skills.
  • Able to take initiative and make decisions under pressure. 
  • Experience maintaining health forms, paperwork, and documentation.
