Description

One Fair Wage is an organization seeking to raise wages, enhance working conditions in the service sector, and end all subminimum wages in the United States. With the Great Resignation, millions of workers are refusing to work for subminimum wages, employers are raising wages to recruit staff, and the political landscape to advance policy to raise wages has changed dramatically.

In Massachusetts, One Fair Wage is seeking to advance the One Fair Wage policy as a ballot initiative in November 2024. To achieve this, MA One Fair Wage is hiring paid canvassers to collect signatures to put the One Fair Wage initiative on the ballot in November, in support of reaching our goal of 20,000 signatures. Paid canvassers would report to the signature drive field manager.

The candidate will be responsible for collecting and reporting legitimate signatures for the One Fair Wage petition, actively promoting One Fair Wage, and interacting with the public to build support and understanding for the cause. The role requires excellent communication, resilience, and a strong understanding of the campaign's goals, ensuring a strong representation and effectiveness in driving the campaign forward.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collect signatures: Approach individuals in public places, such as parks, shopping centers, or events, and explain the purpose and importance of the petition. Encourage them to sign the petition, ensuring they meet the eligibility criteria and provide accurate information.
  • Understand the issue: Stay informed about the One Fair Wage ballot initiative and clearly communicate it to the public. Address any questions or concerns they may have and provide factual information to support the cause.
  • Document and organize signatures: Accurately record the details of each signatory, including their name, address, contact information, and any additional required information. Ensure that the collected signatures are organized and stored securely.
  • Meet targets: Work towards achieving daily and weekly signature collection targets. Display self-motivation and determination to meet or exceed set goals while maintaining quality and accuracy in signature collection.
  • Petition Submission: Submit collected signatures to city and town clerks before deadlines, ensuring they are organized and properly formatted according to the requirements. Collect certified signatures from local clerks to bring to the central OFW office in Boston.

Required Qualifications

  • Reliably commute to collect and submit signatures. The central office is located in downtown Boston, but the signature collection will be throughout MA.
  • Strong ability to connect with people and make pitch to collect signatures and build rapport quickly.
  • Persuasive and ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ethical and able to adhere to legal guidelines and regulations.
  • Physical stamina to stand or walk for extended periods and work in various weather conditions.
  • Past experience as a service worker, and have worked in the restaurant industry in the last 3-5 years; or is a worker member of a workers’ organization interested in working in the restaurant industry

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and interest in the cause or issue addressed by the petition
  • Ability to speak a language other than English
  • Previous experience in advocacy, community organizing, or similar roles is desirable but not mandatory.
