About Pioneer Works

Pioneer Works is a renowned cultural center in Brooklyn, New York dedicated to experimentation, education, and production across the disciplines of art, science, music, and technology.

Position Description

Pioneer Works seeks an experienced and highly motivated Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFO/COO). This person will work in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer and senior staff to carry out the strategic vision of Pioneer Works. The CFO/COO will oversee both financial management and operational strategy. This person will be responsible for managing Pioneer Works’ financial operations, overseeing a $9M annual budget, which comprises both private and public funding, as well as capital projects. This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing management team at a critical juncture in our young organization’s evolution; by leading the development and execution of operational and strategic goals, the CFO/COO will ensure the organization's continued growth and success.

Key responsibilities include managing the finance department – including overseeing cash flow and debt structure – establishing financial and organizational policies and procedures, and managing the earned income streams for the organization. This person will also lead internal initiatives including the implementation of data systems across the organization as a management tool.

Financial and Operational Responsibilities

  • Oversee all financial operations, including budget management, financial forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, working closely with the development team and program managers to set clear and achievable targets and determine the responsible and strategic allocation of funds across the organization.
  • Oversee the management of restricted funding and reporting.
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
  • Together with the controller, lead the preparation of financial statements, reports, and budgets, providing analysis and recommendations to inform decision-making.
  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and investment strategies to optimize financial performance.
  • Collaborate with department heads to support organizational development initiatives and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Lead the integration of an improved data management system across the organization.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to identify opportunities for growth and improvement, driving initiatives to increase efficiency and maximize impact.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience (10+ years), preferably within the nonprofit sector or a related field. Previous experience in arts administration or working with cultural organizations is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate all departments to achieve common goals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of non-profit financial regulations and compliance.
  • Experience in finance and/or accounting; thorough understanding of financial accounting principles and practices, with the ability to lead financial reporting and analysis.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and provide strategic recommendations.
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, nonprofit management, arts administration, or a related discipline is required. MBA or MPA, or CPA also preferred.
  • Additionally, a successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to the arts and cultural sector.

In alignment with Pioneer Works' current hybrid work policy, all applicants must be available to report to our Brooklyn-based office at least three days per week.
